Can thyroid nodules disappear?

A thyroid nodule seen on one ultrasound may sometimes be smaller — or no longer clearly visible — on a follow-up examination.

In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, pseudonodular inflammatory changes may no longer be clearly visible on follow-up ultrasound. Cystic nodules can shrink considerably or even resolve, while solid nodules may also decrease in size due to degenerative changes.

Importantly, a decrease in size does not by itself prove that a nodule is benign. Ultrasound characteristics — and cytology when indicated — remain essential for proper assessment.

What happens after a diagnosis of thyroid cancer?

For patients with differentiated thyroid cancer, treatment is not a single step but a carefully planned pathway — from preoperative assessment and surgery to postoperative risk evaluation and, when indicated, radioactive iodine therapy.

Not every patient needs radioactive iodine, and when it is used, the administered amount of I-131 is individualized according to the risk of recurrence, disease status and treatment goal.

After radioiodine therapy, post-treatment whole-body scintigraphy can provide important information about iodine-avid thyroid tissue and possible disease sites. Diagnostic follow-up scans are not routinely required for every patient and should be used selectively.

This carousel summarizes the current approach based on the 2025 American Thyroid Association (ATA) Guidelines and the 2022 European Thyroid Association (ETA) Consensus Statement.

Can stress affect the thyroid?

The relationship between psychological stress and autoimmune thyroid disease is complex — and not the same for Graves’ disease and Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Research suggests an association between stressful life events and the onset of Graves’ disease, particularly in retrospective studies. However, prospective data are less consistent, and a causal relationship has not been established.

For Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, evidence that stressful life events trigger the disease is considerably weaker.

Stress may be one contributing factor — but it should not be presented as a proven cause of autoimmune thyroid disease.

Thyroid cancer is not a single disease.

Its biological behavior and prognosis depend strongly on the tumor type, degree of differentiation, and histological grade.

Differentiated thyroid carcinomas arise from follicular cells and generally have an excellent prognosis. However, differentiated morphology does not necessarily mean low-grade disease — high-grade features may also occur.

Poorly differentiated and differentiated high-grade carcinomas represent more aggressive follicular cell-derived tumors, while anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is undifferentiated and has a markedly different biological behavior.

Medullary thyroid carcinoma belongs to a separate group, as it originates from parafollicular C cells rather than follicular cells.

Understanding these distinctions is an important first step in understanding thyroid cancer classification, prognosis, and treatment.

How often should you have a thyroid ultrasound?

The appropriate follow-up interval depends on why the ultrasound was performed, whether thyroid nodules are present, their EU-TIRADS category and size, and previous cytology results.

In Hashimoto’s thyroiditis without nodules or other suspicious findings, there is no universally defined interval for routine ultrasound follow-up. Repeated imaging should be individualized rather than performed automatically at fixed, frequent intervals.

For thyroid nodules, follow-up is guided by ultrasound risk stratification, size and, when available, cytology.

This carousel summarizes the 2023 European Thyroid Association recommendations and current guidance on ultrasound use in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

A 2025 meta-analysis adds new data to the discussion on vitamin D and autoimmune thyroid disease.

In randomized studies, vitamin D supplementation was associated with a significant reduction in TPOAb compared with controls, while a significant effect on TgAb was not confirmed.

Subgroup analyses also found a reduction in TPOAb in studies using daily supplementation, but not in those using weekly regimens. This is an interesting signal — not evidence that daily dosing is superior.

Importantly, lower antibody levels do not necessarily translate into better clinical outcomes.

Vitamin D is not a treatment for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, and the optimal dose and supplementation regimen in autoimmune thyroid disease remain unclear.

Individual assessment still matters.
