Most people think gallstones are harmless because the pain comes and goes.
This patient had been having pain in the upper abdomen for months.
The pain was usually worse after eating oily, fried or fatty foods.
Every time it settled on its own, she ignored it.
Until one day it didn’t.
She came to the emergency with severe abdominal pain and required urgent surgery.
Gallstones can cause:
• Recurrent biliary colic
• Acute cholecystitis (infection/inflammation of the gallbladder)
• Jaundice if a stone blocks the bile duct
• Acute pancreatitis, which can sometimes be life-threatening
Not every gallstone needs surgery.
But recurrent pain after meals is a warning sign that should not be ignored.
If you frequently develop upper abdominal pain after fatty meals, get evaluated before it turns into an emergency.
