India has reached replacement-level fertility—but the next step is informed and equitable contraceptive use.

Dr. Amit Kumar Yadav, Senior Program Officer, Gates Foundation, highlights that healthy birth spacing improves maternal and child outcomes and requires shared decision-making.

Men must be active participants—not just in sterilization, but in everyday family planning choices.

Dr. Anahita Chauhan, Joint Associate Editor, JOGI, FOGSI busts the myth: Breastfeeding isn't full protection postpartum. The first year post-delivery sees peak accidental pregnancies—discuss contraception early with your partner at 4-6 weeks.

Every birth deserves a healthier tomorrow, and informed family planning plays a vital role in making that possible.

Timing and guidance matter when it comes to postnatal contraception.

Dr. Chandrakala Maran, President, Covai Obst. & Gyn. Society shares valuable insights on the importance of postnatal contraception and healthy birth spacing for improving maternal and newborn health.

As she highlights, contraception is not just about providing a method, but also ensuring women receive the right information and support to make informed choices.

We were at the Fertility Regulation Conclave in Jaipur on 19-20 September. Our session on "Women in Control - DMPA-SC Uncoded" brought together Dr Bhaskar Pal, Dr Suvarna Khadilkar, Dr Jaydeep Tank, Dr Amit Yadav and Dr Swati Gupta who presented FOGSI's perspective, global experience on self-injection, and Rajasthan state NHM's experience of rolling out DMPA-SC.

An interactive Panel Discussion on Reimagining Fertility Regulation for Women’s health, ensued on how contraceptive counselling and fertility-regulation services can become an entry point for identifying and addressing menstrual health and anaemia, while expanding access to innovations that improve women's health across the reproductive life course.

A hands-on drill on DMPA SC Self-Injection provided practical lessons for the attending clinicians.

Thankful to the esteemed panelists for their insights and experiences.

Strengthening Maternal & Newborn Care, One District at a Time.

Taking the CPD-2 learning journey forward, Project ADHUNA held a Continuing Professional Development (CPD-2) Programme in Mau on 13 September 2026, bringing together healthcare professionals for an engaging morning of learning, discussion, and practical skill-building.

The programme focused on strengthening practices in newborn care and prematurity management, with expert-led sessions, interactive discussions, and practical learning designed to support healthcare providers in delivering quality care across the maternal-newborn continuum.

The session also provided an opportunity for healthcare professionals to exchange experiences, discuss clinical challenges, and strengthen their understanding of evidence-based approaches to maternal and newborn care.

A sincere thank you to the Mau Obstetrics & Gynaecological Society, Peadistricians, ADHUNA Champions, Master Trainers, faculty members, and all participating healthcare professionals for their active engagement and commitment to continuous learning.

One district at a time. One learning opportunity at a time. Together, strengthening care for every mother and every newborn.

Project ADHUNA continues to support the Government of Andhra Pradesh and Swasti in strengthening maternal health systems through cascade training. Following the Training of Trainers ( ToT ) , 7 cascade trainings have been successfully conducted for OBGYNs, Medical Officers and Staff Nurses, translating ToT learning into practical, provider-level capacity building.

The trainings focused on interactive and competency-based learning, pre- and post-training assessments, practical skill-building, case-based clinical discussions, peer learning and knowledge exchange.

Under the guidance from ADHUNA champion and Master training Dr. Susila Pinnamaneni, these sessions are helping strengthen the knowledge, skills and clinical confidence of healthcare providers involved in maternal care.

We appreciate the continued efforts of the Government of Andhra Pradesh, Swasti, FOGSI, ADHUNA champions and all participating healthcare providers in taking this learning forward.

From ToT to cascade — strengthening teams, strengthening systems and advancing quality maternal care.

Safer care starts with the right practices.

On World Patient Safety Day, Project ADHUNA highlights how patient safety is embedded in everyday maternal and newborn care — from following evidence-based protocols to building the skills and confidence of healthcare providers.

Because every protocol followed, every skill strengthened, and every timely action can make care safer.

Safe practices. Skilled providers. Safer care.
