Your sleep study says “normal”… so why are you still waking up exhausted?

Understanding your results takes more than a glance at one number. In adults, an Apnoea–Hypopnoea Index (AHI) below five events per hour generally falls below the diagnostic threshold for obstructive sleep apnea, but your healthcare provider considers the findings alongside your symptoms, medical history and the type of test performed.

A home sleep apnea test focuses on sleep-related breathing and does not capture every possible cause of poor sleep. Persistent fatigue, frequent awakenings, loud snoring or witnessed breathing pauses deserve follow-up even after a reassuring result.

When a home test is negative, inconclusive or technically inadequate and sleep apnea remains a concern, further assessment with polysomnography may be recommended.

At iSD Health Solutions, we encourage you to understand what your results mean for you and discuss the next appropriate step with your healthcare provider. Swipe through this carousel, save it for your next consultation and share it with someone who still feels tired despite a “normal” result.

Your ambitions need more than determination.

They need a body and brain that have had the opportunity to recover. In Sleep COVID, author Gregory R. Arneaud connects sleep and breathing to the energy, clarity and presence we bring into everyday life.

The book asks us to look beyond simply getting through another day.

“It’s about claiming a life that actually feels like yours. Waking up clear-headed. Showing up with real energy.”

Protecting sleep means making time for rest and investigating symptoms that suggest that rest is being interrupted.

What could change if you stopped accepting exhaustion as your normal?

Long day, one quick lime, late traffic… and suddenly the drive home feels longer than it should.

This episode of Sleep Talk strip is a reminder that fatigue behind the wheel is not just “feeling a little tired” it can affect alertness, reaction time and decision-making when you need them most.

If you are struggling to keep your eyes open, your safest move is not to push through. Pull over, rest, and protect yourself and everyone else on the road.

And the stakes are real. Arrive Alive Trinidad and Tobago recorded 61 road traffic accidents and 64 deaths in 2026 as at 21 September. Of those deaths, 19 were drivers, 9 were passengers and 26 were pedestrians. 7 motorcyclists, 2 pedal cyclists and 1 loader among the fatalities a reminder that road danger affects more than just the person behind the wheel.

So if this strip feels familiar, the long shift, the after-work stop, the heavy eyes in traffic, do not ignore it.

Fatigue may be your body’s warning sign that your sleep is not where it should be. Better sleep supports safer driving, better performance and better health.

Can you prevent sleep apnea naturally?

Not always but for many people, the choices made during the day and before bed can influence obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity. OSA happens when the upper airway repeatedly narrows or collapses during sleep. Globally, an estimated 936 million adults aged 30–69 may have mild-to-severe OSA, including about 425 million with moderate-to-severe disease.

For people carrying excess weight, weight management can make a meaningful difference. One longitudinal study found that a 10% reduction in body weight predicted about a 26% reduction in AHI, the number of breathing interruptions recorded per hour of sleep. Regular physical activity, nutritious eating and sustainable weight management can therefore support both general health and sleep-disordered breathing management.

Position matters too. For some people, sleeping on the side rather than the back can help reduce airway obstruction. Avoiding alcohol close to bedtime may also help because alcohol can further relax the muscles supporting the airway. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine includes side-sleeping, maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise and avoiding alcohol near bedtime among lifestyle measures that may help people with OSA.

Upper-airway exercises may provide another useful tool. Myofunctional therapy targets the tongue, soft palate and throat muscles. Earlier pooled research reported roughly a 50% reduction in AHI among adults, although newer evidence supports viewing these exercises primarily as an adjunct rather than a replacement for established treatment.

Most importantly, lifestyle changes are not a cure for every case of sleep apnea. Anatomy, neurological control of breathing and other factors can still require clinical treatment. If you snore loudly, wake gasping or choking, experience witnessed breathing pauses, morning headaches or persistent daytime sleepiness, get assessed rather than guessing.

Today, on Granny Pearl Quintyn’s (my grandmother) birthday, I’m reminded of where my passion for sleep health began.

She was my first exposure to snoring, long before I understood it could be a warning sign of something more serious. Her story inspired The Wake Up Call: How You Sleep Is How You Live which fueling my 29+ year mission as a Certified Respiratory Therapist with nearly 15 years serving the Caribbean.

A special thank you to Dr. Eric Thomas, whose message and book You Owe You challenged and inspired me to stop sitting on my own story and put my experience, knowledge, and purpose into a book that could help others. I’m equally grateful for his support in bringing greater awareness to sleep apnea and sleep health around the world.

Now the mission continues with my new book, Sleep COVID, launching at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad during AMCHAM T&T’s 30th Annual HEALTH, SAFETY, SECURITY AND ENVIRONMENT (HSSE) CONFERENCE & EXHIBITION.

Join the pre-launch list at SleepCOVID.com/preorder and become part of the Sleep COVID Community for education, answers, and solutions for sleep apnea, insomnia, and other sleep challenges.

Happy heavenly birthday, Granny Pearl. ❤️

You helped give me the purpose.
Dr. Eric Thomas inspired me to put it on paper.
Now the Wake Up Call continues.

Being tired at work isn’t always about a late night or needing another cup of coffee. Persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking refreshed can leave you fighting to stay alert long after you get out of bed.

In 2024, 30.5% of U.S. adults reported sleeping fewer than 7 hours per day, while adults are generally recommended to get at least 7 hours of sleep.

And that fatigue can follow you straight into the workplace. In the America Insomnia Survey of 7,428 employed adults, 23.2% met criteria for broadly defined insomnia.

Insomnia was associated with the equivalent of 11.3 lost workdays of performance per worker each year, largely through presenteeism, being physically at work, but functioning below your usual capacity. Even after accounting for other health conditions, the estimated productivity loss remained 7.8 days annually.

So if you’re regularly struggling through meetings, relying heavily on caffeine, losing focus or actually dozing off at your desk, don’t simply normalise it as “work stress.” Persistent fatigue can be a sign that your sleep quantity, sleep quality or an underlying sleep disorder deserves attention.

Waking up suddenly gasping, sweating, with a racing heart or a sense of panic can feel frightening and it is easy to assume anxiety is the only explanation.

But when these episodes happen repeatedly at night, especially alongside loud snoring, choking, restless sleep or daytime fatigue, it is worth looking more closely at what may be happening while you sleep.

Sleep apnea can trigger many of the same sensations.

When the airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep, breathing can stop or become restricted, oxygen levels may fall, and the brain briefly activates to reopen the airway. These repeated micro-arousals can leave you waking abruptly, short of breath, sweaty or with your heart pounding even if you do not remember most of the breathing interruptions themselves.

The important question is not simply, "Why did I wake up?” but “What is happening to my breathing while I sleep?”

If these symptoms sound familiar, consider speaking with a healthcare professional and or start with a sleep assessment. Identifying the cause is the first step toward better sleep, better breathing and better health.

What if the missing piece of your wellness routine happens while you’re asleep?

The Healthy Living Expo is exploring eight dimensions: Physical, Mental, Emotional, Social, Financial, Spiritual, Occupational and Environmental.

Sleep connects with each one. It supports our energy, attention and mood; it helps us show up for work, family and community; and the environment we sleep in can affect the rest we get. Healthy sleep means getting enough hours and waking refreshed.

For Caribbean families, sleep also belongs in conversations about chronic disease. PAHO has reported that noncommunicable diseases account for about 75% of deaths in the Caribbean. Poor sleep is not an explanation for that entire burden, but sleep health deserves attention alongside nutrition, movement and medical care.

If you snore loudly, wake up gasping, struggle to stay asleep or feel tired despite spending enough time in bed, come and talk with us. Sleep apnea can repeatedly interrupt breathing and lower oxygen levels during sleep, and research has linked it with increased cardiovascular risk.

Visit the iSD Health Solutions booth at the Healthy Living Expo today or tomorrow. Explore family-friendly activities, expert talks, health screenings and vendor exhibits while we put sleep health on the wellness agenda.

When Your Body Is Tired but Your Brain Says, “We Have Things to Discuss.”

It’s 1:47 a.m. The house is quiet, your partner is fast asleep, and suddenly your brain remembers the email you forgot, the bill due next week and something awkward you said five years ago. Sound familiar?

Insomnia is more than the occasional bad night. It can involve persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking too early or getting satisfactory sleep, along with daytime consequences. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine estimates that roughly 10–15% of adults experience persistent, troublesome insomnia.

Those effects do not stay in the bedroom. Poor sleep can affect concentration, mood, decision-making and workplace performance. In a study of 7,428 employed adults, insomnia was associated with the equivalent of 11.3 lost workdays of performance per person per year, highlighting the impact sleep can have on productivity.

Something else many people do not realise is that insomnia and obstructive sleep apnea can occur together. This is often called COMISA, or comorbid insomnia and sleep apnea. A large systematic review found that about 38% of people with OSA had insomnia, while approximately 35% of people presenting with insomnia also met criteria for OSA.

Sleep apnea does not always look like someone simply falling asleep during the day. Repeated breathing disturbances can fragment sleep and make it difficult to stay asleep or return to sleep.

So, in this episode of Sleep Talk, she may be watching the clock while he snores peacefully beside her, but the message is bigger than one rough night.

If sleepless nights keep showing up, start by understanding your sleep.
