Day 3 -

Day 3 of the conference started with a thought-provoking morning of plenaries challenging us to rethink how Africa finances, builds capacity for and delivers vector control in a rapidly changing disease landscape.

Across the sessions, a common message emerged: Africa must strengthen the systems, investments and scientific leadership needed to stay ahead of vector-borne diseases.

🦟 Re-centering malaria financing on vector control: Prof. Manuel Lluberas called for renewed investment in interventions that tackle malaria transmission at its source, noting that the shift towards clinical case management should not come at the expense of vector control. "We cannot control or eliminate malaria without controlling its vectors."

🤝 Rethinking collaboration and capacity building: Prof. Gerry Killeen emphasised the need to move beyond short-term approaches to capacity building and invest in scientists who can become independent, thrive and inspire others. He also highlighted the importance of authentic collaborations that strengthen institutions and create lasting value.

🔬 A new paradigm for mosquito-borne disease control: Dr. Silas Majambere challenged Africa to confront gaps in preparedness and rethink how the continent can build a more coordinated and effective response to mosquito-borne diseases.

🌍 From malaria to neglected tropical diseases: Prof. Heather Ferguson highlighted the opportunity to build on the successes of malaria vector control to accelerate progress against NTDs through consolidated policies, stronger surveillance, transfer of novel innovations and collective action.

🦟 Keeping Anopheles funestus on the radar: Prof. Fredros Okumu underscored the importance of continued surveillance of An. funestus. Although found in fewer areas and often at lower densities, the species continues to contribute significantly to malaria transmission-reinforcing the need to understand its ecology and behaviour and remain prepared for potential resurgence.

As Day 3 continues, the discussions are reinforcing a critical priority: effective vector control requires sustained investment, strong institutions, independent scientific leadership and collaboration that delivers lasting impact.

Day 2 | - Scientific sessions 5-8

Researchers and vector control experts are examining the evidence and innovations needed to stay ahead of an evolving mosquito-borne disease landscape.

Discussions are spanning mosquito surveillance and behaviour, larval and outdoor control, parasite tracking and genomics, emerging and invasive vectors, climate and environmental change, and the social and behavioural factors that shape vector control

Importantly, the science is moving beyond understanding the problem to asking how evidence can be translated into smarter, more targeted and locally responsive interventions.

As mosquito populations, transmission patterns and environments change, strengthening surveillance, embracing innovation and putting communities at the centre will be critical to making vector control more effective and sustainable.

Day 2 | - Plenaries

From community-led mosquito abatement to next-generation vector control, Day 2 of PAMCA Kenya 2026 conference plenaries sparked rich conversations on how we can rethink and strengthen the fight against mosquito-borne diseases.

🔹 Prof. Joseph Wakoli Wekesa challenged us to reimagine malaria control through community-based mosquito abatement, drawing lessons from programmes in the USA and underscoring the power of community action.

🔹 Prof. Charles Wondji unpacked the evolving landscape of indoor mosquito management, exploring LLINs, IRS, funding, policy priorities, insecticide resistance and emerging challenges.

🔹 Dr. Tianyun Steven Su explored the journey from biorational larvicides and larviciding to the future of resistance management, highlighting opportunities for more sustainable mosquito control.

🔹 Dr. Ary F***j shared lessons from Integrated Mosquito Management in the USA, demonstrating how surveillance, research, coordinated systems and targeted control can work together.

Across the plenaries, one message stood out: the changing mosquito landscape calls for integrated, evidence-driven and community-centred solutions.

Day 2 - begins not with the usual buzz of science, but with a moment of reflection.

We pause to honour the memory and legacy of Dr. Prosper Chaki , remembered as a visionary leader, a builder of systems, and a passionate champion of community engagement.
Through the inaugural Memorial Lecture delivered by Dr. Yeromin Mlacha, we reflect on his enduring conviction: that vector elimination demands strong partnerships, meaningful engagement with policymakers, and always, communities at the centre. His pioneering work on larval source management in Tanzania and beyond remains a lasting part of his scientific legacy.
A moving moment came as a heartfelt message of appreciation from Dr. Doreen G. Ndossi (wife of late Dr. Chaki), and their family was shared. It is a reminder of the life and love behind the science.
His legacy lives on. 🕊️
