Our first Conference Fellowship is done. Here is what it looked like from the inside.
In June we opened a fully sponsored place at KRAcon 2026 for renal nurses: registration, travel and accommodation. No purchase, no vendor tie, no strings. Two nurses from county dialysis units made it to Mombasa: Jibril Mohamed from Mandera County and Florence Kioko of Tana River County Hospital.
On the Thursday evening we sat down with them, away from the sessions, and asked two questions: why did you apply, and what are you taking home?
One of them qualified in 2018. KRAcon was their first conference ever. Not for lack of interest, but because the cost has always been out of reach. In their words: "Next time, even if I don't get sponsorship, I'll save up and pay for myself."
What they are taking home is practical:
• Routine water quality testing, and a written case for it to management
• Checking that every session actually delivers adequate dialysis, not just that it ran
• What HDF does that conventional HD does not
• The new Kenya Renal Guidelines, which one of them had already shared with fellow nurses before the conference ended
We learned a few things too. Next year we start the logistics earlier, and we are exploring a shift-shadowing visit at a leading Nairobi unit so fellows see high-volume HDF in practice.
The place will rotate. Cohort 2027 will be open to any renal nurse in Kenya, same terms.
Thank you, Jibril and Florence, for giving us your time, and to everyone who shared the call.
