“What abusers all have in common is how they prioritize their own desire above the safety, peace, and autonomy of their victim. Sometimes, the desire itself is to take away the other’s safety, peace and autonomy.”
Those of us in the field of domestic violence recognize the behavior of the insurrectionists: their need for power and control, their sense of entitlement.

81 individuals killed during the year of 2018 in the state of Ohio alone. 46% of those cases occurred when the victims had ended or were in the process of ending the relationship. Yet women are still persecuted more heavily for killing their abusers than men who killed their victims. Guns were used in 75% of these homicides. Currently most states have a 1 year statute of limitations for pressing charges to stop these perpetrators from abusing future victims.
Enough is enough.
“Among the 81 fatalities in the ODVN report are four family members killed in West Chester Twp. in April. Gurpreet Singh is facing aggravated murder charges in the deaths of his wife, in-laws and an aunt by marriage.
ODVN last year kicked off a clemency project to help women imprisoned for killing their abusers to apply for clemency from the governor. The organization helped 13 women apply but only one, Thomia Hunter, had her 15 to life sentence reduced by Republican John Kasich to time served. The group also helped seven women prepare to see the Ohio Parole Board.”
Eighty-one Ohioans died at the hands of domestic abusers in the last year and 75% of those cases involved a firearm, according to the Ohio Domestic Violence Network’s annual list of fatalities.

When we say that intimate partner abuse is at the root of almost every issue we care about and that includes police brutality. In order to move the needle around our worlds most pressing issues we must address intimate partner violence.
Without addressing IPV, all of our efforts will only act as a bandaid.
The deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner and the almost daily news stories about abusive and violent police conduct are currently prompting questions about the appropriate use of force by police officers. Moreover, the history of police brutality directed towards women is well documented. Most of...

Financial abuse is a significant barrier victims of intimate partner violence face. We need women in the work place. We need women to thrive in their careers. We must not allow 2020 to take away all the process we have made. We must work together to ensure that does not happen.
When women succeed we all succeed.

3 women are killed every single day due to intimate partner violence.
73% of those where killed tried to leave or after they left.
When people questioned, “why didn’t she leave.” For many they do not see an opportunity to leave. Victims are the experts of their situations. They know it better than anyone else.
Support them. Do not force them.
Aaron Fraser described what it was like to find the skull of his mother, Bonnie Haim, buried in the backyard of his childhood home in North Jacksonville, Florida, in December 2014.

What would happen if we stopped asking victims of intimate partner abuse, “why don’t you just leave?” and instead provide them community and support to only survive but thrive?

3 women killed everyday by the person who is suppose to love them.
When 48-year-old Ella Jackson went missing in October, her husband told investigators varying stories about where she might have gone. He first told police she would disappear routinely and would be back, but that explanation morphed over time with stories of a plot to flee to Russia and possible me...

A woman's life is safer with a man she does not know."
A new study reveals an increase of gun-related deaths to about four women a day.

Most people when they think of intimate partner violence see a woman with a black eye and a busted lip; very similar to what you see on the Lifetime movies. Even though that is accurate it also does not even scratch the surface of what most women experience. It does not show the significant impact i

Being isolated, fear of lost income, and not able to escape the gaslighting and manipulation creates the perfect storm. Even with increased reporting there is even more reason now to not report. We will not know the impact (if ever) for years to come. Isolation is how IPV thrives and gains power. The manipulation is more powerful that the physical violence in keeping victims held under their power.
"In Los Angeles, the drop in violent crime has been marred by an increase in domestic violence calls. According to Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva, deputies responded to about 8% more domestic violence calls between mid-March and mid-April, when compared to last year.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, intimate partner violence affects 12 million people a year. Since stay-at-home orders went into affect, some regions have reported spikes in domestic violence complaints, while others are seeing a drop-off in domestic violence calls, as victims holed up with their abusers become more isolated."
Crime rates have dropped in numerous cities during stay-at-home orders.

Femicide, or women being killed because they are women, has been in the news in recent years. France debated last year whether to add the term to its penal code during its monthslong nationwide conversation on domestic violence. United Nations homicide studies have found killings by domestic partners are often underreported.

12 million individuals every year will be in an abusive relationship in the United States alone.
3 women are killed in this country everyday.
As sobering as these numbers are they are getting much worse today.
We have the power to change this. We can end intimate partner violence. Together we can.
As millions across the U.S. stay home to help flatten the curve, domestic violence organizations and support systems are scrambling to adapt to the rapidly shifting landscape.

"Concerns have arisen both in the United States and China with regards to the increase in IPV cases that could occur as a result of people in abusive relationships being forced to isolate together. Rights groups in Europe have now started to sound the horn over potential blindspots in this area. In times of crisis and natural disasters, there is a documented rise in intimate partner abuse. As normal life shuts down, victims can be exposed to abusers for long periods of time and cut off from social and institutional support.
The financial insecurity that often prohibits victims from leaving abusers can also worsen in the aftermath of a crisis. Many who have previously escaped and took a serving job to begin to rebuild are now vulnerable to being sucked back into the abuser’s power. It is times like this that we MUST look at our cultural holes and realize what we are doing is not working! We must realize we are ignoring one of the most significant problems we face as a country and as a world. When is enough, enough?"

Intimate Partner Violence is the leading cause of homeless women and children.
"According to latest government figures, just 2% of households made homeless because of domestic abuse between April and December 2018 were offered social housing. As a result, survivors can face homelessness or returning to their abusers when their time is up at a refuge. This is because councils are only required to provide housing for domestic violence survivors if they can prove they are more vulnerable than the average homeless person.
“It’s actually incredibly difficult to prove vulnerability because the evidence required is hard to obtain,” says Hannah Gousy, head of policy at Crisis. One woman who fled her home says she was asked by her housing officer to get a letter signed by her abuser stating that he had r***d and attacked her."
Survivors face returning to their abuser or sleeping rough as they can’t prove they are vulnerable to council housing officers
