Our brains are pretty good at filling in the blanks. โYou, okay?โ โ๐ ๐ฆ๐ข๐ฉ, ๐โ๐ฎ ๐ฐ๐ฌ๐ข๐บโ and just like that, we think we know.
Sometimes, we do the same with others. We see someone struggling, behaving differently, or choosing to step away โ and quickly fill in the blanks with our own assumptions. But what we see on the surface may not tell the whole story. Behind โIโm okayโ could be a pain they havenโt found the words to share.
So, letโs listen. Not to diagnose, but to understand. Not every struggle looks the same, and we may never fully know someoneโs lived experience. The same thoughtfulness should extend to ourselves, too.
We can be mindful of our mental health without being too quick to label every difficult moment. Some challenges may call for resilience. Others may require us to adapt, take responsibility, have difficult conversations or find a way forward. And when something feels beyond what we can manage, seeking help from the right people matters.
Mental health is important. At the same time, not every difficult experience necessarily points to a mental health condition, and we should avoid self-diagnosing without understanding what we're experiencing.
This World Mental Health Day 2026, letโs listen a little closer: to others and to ourselves. With empathy, an open mind, and the courage to seek the right support when we need it.
