Air helps makes space for practice.

Lucius — my rescue — makes himself at home.

And that’s part of the practice too.

I have been thinking about what it means to reengage with life.

It’s small steps:

— Trying something.
— Going somewhere.
— Making something.
— Laughing when it doesn’t work.
— Taking another breath.

Then beginning again.

I’ve been thinking about how much energy I spend trying to make life go the way I think it should.

What am I resisting?

And what would it mean to move with what is here?

After looking outward at the world, I find myself coming back to Earth.

Not because there is somewhere else to go.

Because this is where I am.

Back to the body.
Back to the breath.
Back to the ground beneath my feet.

Tree Pose has always seemed to me a simple image of this.

Rooted below.
Reaching above.
Moving with everything that moves around it.

And yet balance isn’t stillness.

There are constant adjustments — a shift here, a movement there, the body responding to what is happening in each moment.

I think life is much the same.

How do I stay grounded without becoming fixed?

How do I remain present to what is happening in the world without losing my footing in my own life?

I keep asking myself about the boundaries between “me” and everything else.

Practice gives me somewhere tangible to explore that question.

I stand on the Earth.

I am part of the Earth.

And for this moment, I simply stand here.

Returning — but not to the same place.

To Earth.

I’ve been looking at the haze over Borneo and Malaysia and finding it difficult to know what to do with what I’m seeing.

So I drew monsters into it.

This is an actual photograph taken through the haze. The Kaiju are mine.

It started as an image-making exercise, but the more I looked at it, the less playful it felt.

Forests are burning. Wildlife is being displaced. People are breathing the smoke.

And beyond Borneo, we are watching wars continue, with lives and landscapes caught in conflicts that seem increasingly difficult to understand from the outside.

I keep coming back to something I’ve been encountering in Vedanta:

What happens when we mistake our way of seeing the world for the world itself?

We divide things into this and that.

Us and them.
Mine and yours.
Human and nature.
Victory and defeat.

We build boundaries, then behave as though they are absolute.

But the haze doesn’t recognise a border.

The atmosphere doesn’t belong to one country.

The forest doesn’t exist separately from the creatures that depend on it, or from the air we breathe.

And neither do we.

I don’t think drawing monsters makes any of this less serious.

Sometimes art is simply how we look at something we don’t yet know how to put into words.

And sometimes the monsters we draw are really questions.
