Someone collapses in the market and starts shaking. A crowd gathers, and nobody is sure what to do.
Many of us were never taught what to do in this situation.
Here's what to do:
• Stay calm and stay with them.
• Move hard or sharp objects away.
• Cushion their head.
• Note the time the seizure started.
What not to do: don't hold them down, and don't put anything in their mouth.
When the shaking stops, if they're breathing, gently turn them onto their side when safe and stay with them as they recover.
Call for emergency medical help if the seizure lasts 5 minutes or longer, another seizure starts before they recover, they have trouble breathing or waking up, they're injured, or it's their first known seizure.
For many people living with epilepsy, the seizure ends in minutes. The stares, the whispers and the fear of being judged can stay much longer. Epilepsy is a neurological condition, and no one should be treated as dangerous or less worthy of respect because of it.
Save this, and send it to someone who should know. 💜
