The virus spreads easily from person to person and has a fatality rate of up to 100% in past outbreaks.

With open borders, the presence of carrier bats, and limited hospital preparedness, Nepal cannot ignore this warning.

HIV 🤝 TB — A Deadly Duo if Missed

🦠 TB is the leading cause of death in people living with HIV

⚠️ Why is TB common in HIV?
• Weakened immunity (low CD4)
• Atypical & extrapulmonary TB more common
• Smear-negative disease is frequent

🔍 Clinical clues
• Prolonged fever
• Weight loss
• Night sweats
• Lymph nodes, pleural effusion, meningitis

💡 Key messages
✔️ Test all TB patients for HIV
✔️ Screen all HIV patients for TB
✔️ Start Anti-TB treatment early
✔️ Initiate ART promptly (timing matters)
✔️ Give TB preventive therapy when eligible

👨‍⚕️ Doctor’s reminder
👉 Think TB even with normal CXR in HIV
👉 Don’t wait for sputum positivity
