Today's featured ingredient is Koromiko — a beautiful New Zealand native, with delicate purple-white flowers that has been used traditionally for hundreds of years.

We source our Koromiko from Self Heal and Phytomed, who use the wild-harvested leaf tips to make the tincture.

Koromiko has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, which are closely tied to its high concentrations of tannins and phenolic compounds.

Koromiko is known to assist with daily bumps, bruises, aches and pains and is one of the 5 New Zealand botanicals we selected for our X-ZONE Relief range.

**NATIVE HERB SPOTLIGHT #7 — TŪPĀKIHI (TUTU)** 🇳🇿
A native plant with a remarkable history in rongoā Māori — and some fascinating laboratory results!**. Tūpākihi (*Coriaria arborea*) has traditionally been known as the **“Bone Mender”**, with a history of use in rongoā Māori for broken bones, sprains, bruising, rheumatism and deep muscular pain.
But there's something particularly interesting about this native plant.
💥Careful handling during preparation is especially important with Tūpākihi 💥.
Our Tūpākihi oil comes from Tutu Rongoā Māori, who use the leaves and shoots, slowly infusing them in cold-pressed sunflower oil over many months. Their preparations are handcrafted with tikanga and aroha — respecting the plants and traditional knowledge throughout the process.
🔬 **WHERE TRADITION MEETS SCIENCE**
We had the very same Tūpākihi oil used in our X-ZONE Joints Rub independently tested by Trinity Bioactives in Wellington.
The result? 🧪 **28.4% inhibition of COX-2 activity!**
COX-2 is an enzyme involved in the body's inflammatory and pain pathways.
For comparison, the anti-inflammatory drug indomethacin demonstrated approximately 30% inhibition in the same laboratory testing.
💥 Tūpākihi is one of the New Zealand native botanicals we've chosen for our **X-ZONE Joints Rub**.
A big thank you to **Tutu Rongoā** for supplying this remarkable native botanical and for their dedication to traditional plant knowledge.
💥Tūpākihi — a fascinating example of traditional knowledge meeting modern scientific investigation.**

This remarkable New Zealand plant can grow up to 5 centimetres a day during the heat of summer.

Kareao, also known as Supplejack, can grow up to 18 metres long and has a rich history in rongoā Māori. It was traditionally used alongside plants such as Tūpākihi to support recovery from sprains, swollen joints and bruises — earning it the nickname “The Bone Mender’s Ally.”

Our supplier, Self Heal, uses the root to make the tincture and describes Kareao as supporting joint mobility and normal muscle function — which is why we chose it for X-ZONE Joints Rub.

They also describe Kareao as an “activator herb” — which means it has its own healing properties, while at the same time helps to activate the other herbs around it.

Its bright red berries are also an important food source for New Zealand's native birds such as kererū.

Kareao — is one of 11 native botanicals in the X-ZONE range.

NATIVE HERB SPOTLIGHT #5 — KŌWHAI 💛
Few native trees announce the arrival of spring quite like Kōwhai.
Its spectacular golden flowers are instantly recognisable — and its name is wonderfully straightforward too: in te reo Māori, “kōwhai” means “yellow.” 💛
But there’s much more to this beautiful native tree than its flowers.
💥 Kōwhai has a long history of use in rongoā Māori, with the bark traditionally prepared as a poultice and applied to help soothe sprains and bruises.
💥 Kōwhai wood is also remarkably dense, hard and elastic — quite a contrast to those delicate-looking flowers.
Our tincture supplier, Self Heal, uses the bark to make the Kōwhai tincture found in our X-ZONE Sports range.
And making these tinctures involves a surprising amount of work. Our supplier once told us that for approximately:
1 hour of wild harvesting, there can be around 20 hours of processing!
It certainly gives you a different appreciation for what goes into every botanical tincture we use.
And those beautiful spring flowers have another important role — they're a valuable nectar source for native birds.
You might also spot a little piece of my own life in this Reel. I came across flowering Kōwhai while out riding Merlin, and naturally had to stop and capture it!
Kōwhai — beautiful, resilient, unmistakably New Zealand, and one of 11 native botanicals behind X-ZONE. 💥

NATIVE HERB SPOTLIGHT #4 — PŪRIRI 🇳🇿 💥
What happens when traditional plant knowledge is put to the test in a modern laboratory??? 💥
Pūriri (Vitex lucens) has a long history of use in rongoā Māori and has traditionally been valued for its antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.
The Pūriri we use is wild harvested, with the leaves and fruit used to make the tincture found in our X-ZONE Sports range.
Traditionally, Pūriri has been used topically for sprains, backache and ulcers. Our tincture supplier, Self Heal, also describes Pūriri as an “activator” within our Sports formulation — bringing its own properties while helping to activate the other herbs in the blend.
But we wanted to investigate Pūriri further.
We had our Pūriri tincture independently tested by Trinity Bioactives in Wellington, where it was shown to:
🧪 Reduce COX-2 activity by 14.2%
COX-2 is an enzyme involved in the body's inflammatory and pain pathways.
This result is particularly interesting because many of New Zealand's native botanicals have not yet been extensively studied in modern research settings.
For us, Pūriri is a wonderful example of what X-ZONE is all about:
💥 Traditional plant knowledge
💥 Modern scientific investigation
💥 Remarkable New Zealand botanicals

NATIVE HERB SPOTLIGHT #3 — HARAKEKE 🇳🇿 💥.
Most New Zealanders would recognise Harakeke instantly — but you might not know what lies beneath those familiar sword-shaped leaves.
Harakeke (Phormium tenax), commonly known as New Zealand flax, is one of Aotearoa New Zealand’s most distinctive native plants and has a long and important history of use in Māori culture and rongoā Māori.
Despite its common English name, Harakeke isn't actually a true flax.
And while its leaves are probably the part we know best, it's the root that is used in the tincture we source for X-ZONE.
Traditionally, preparations made from Harakeke root were applied externally for rheumatic joints, muscle aches and swelling — which made this remarkable native particularly interesting to us when developing our formulations.
You'll find Harakeke in two X-ZONE ranges:
💥RELIEF — our everyday range for aches, pains, bumps and bruises.
💥 SPORTS — our strongest range, developed for active bodies and higher pain levels.
Those extraordinary orange-red roots you see in the Reel really are Harakeke roots. We thought they were worth showing because they're a part of this iconic plant that most of us never get to see!
Harakeke — familiar above ground, remarkable below it, and one of 11 New Zealand native botanicals behind X-ZONE 🇳🇿.

NATIVE HERB SPOTLIGHT #2 — KŪMARAHOU 🇳🇿 —
You could easily drive straight past this remarkable native plant without giving it a second thought.
Kūmarahou (Pomaderris kumeraho) has a long history of use in rongoā Māori and has traditionally been used for a remarkably diverse range of purposes — including skin complaints, rheumatism and arthritis.
And here's one of our favourite facts about it…
💥 Rub the flowers or leaves with water and they produce a gentle, soapy lather. This earned Kūmarahou the nickname “gumdigger's soap.”....
The Kūmarahou we use is wild harvested, with the leaves and small twigs used to make the tincture.
You'll find it in two X-ZONE formulations:
🔵X-ZONE JOINTS — we selected Kūmarahou because of its traditional use for rheumatism and arthritis.
🔴X-ZONE SPORTS — our supplier Self Heal describes Kūmarahou as being high in antioxidants and states that it supports “vitality, speed, endurance and physical and mental performance.”
And that roadside footage in our Reel? That's quite typical of this hardy little native. Kūmarahou often grows in poor, low-nutrient soils and can be found in scrub, gumland vegetation, coastal areas and forest margins.
Sometimes some of our most interesting native plants are hiding in plain sight.
Kūmarahou — versatile, uniquely New Zealand, and one of 11 NZ native botanicals behind X-ZONE.

NATIVE HERB SPOTLIGHT — HOROPITO
You’ve heard us talk about the 11 New Zealand native botanicals we use across X-ZONE. Now we’d like to introduce you to them — one remarkable plant at a time.
First up is Horopito (Pseudowintera colorata).
One of New Zealand’s oldest flowering plants, Horopito has a long history of traditional use in rongoā Māori.
Its distinctive leaves have a hot, peppery taste — earning it the name New Zealand pepper tree.
💥 Traditionally valued for its anti-inflammatory properties.
💥 Used as a circulatory stimulant.
💥 One of 5 NZ native botanicals in X-ZONE Relief.
In our Relief formulation, Horopito sits alongside 4 other NZ herbs Harakeke, Kahikatea, Koromiko and Rata, and 7 other familiar ingredients including Arnica, Clove, St Johns Wort, Ginger, Menthol and Witch Hazel, as part of our multi-active approach.
Over the coming weeks, we'll introduce you to more of the native plants behind X-ZONE — where they come from, their traditional uses and why we chose them for our formulations.
Horopito — ancient, uniquely New Zealand, and one of the remarkable native plants behind X-ZONE. 🌿🇳🇿

What makes New Zealand's native plants so special???
💥Part of the answer lies millions of years in the past.💥

New Zealand's botanical story stretches back to Gondwana, the ancient supercontinent from which our land eventually separated and became increasingly isolated.
That isolation helped create something extraordinary — a flora unlike that found almost anywhere else in the world, with many species found only in New Zealand.
It's this remarkable botanical heritage that first inspired us to look more deeply at the traditional uses of our native plants and how they could become part of X-ZONE.
Today we use 11 New Zealand native botanicals across our range, alongside established Western herbs and other active ingredients.
🌿 Harakeke
🌿 Horopito
🌿 Kahikatea
🌿 Kareao
🌿 Koromiko
🌿 Kōwhai
🌿 Kūmarahou
🌿 Pukatea
🌿 Pūriri
🌿 Rātā
🌿 Tūpākihi
They're not there simply because they're from New Zealand. Each was selected for a reason.
Our roots are here. In New Zealand.
