Any person, regardless of age, who is bitten by a mosquito carrying the DENV will be infected by dengue. The Aedes mosquito (that engages in multiple feedings during the day and before sundown) does not have a preference for the blood of younger people.

However, children become more vulnerable due to their tendency to play outdoors during daytime without personal protection. The outdoor settings, like playgrounds, parks, and even schools, are also laden with potential breeding grounds for the mosquito vectors.

Dengue is a viral illness with four serotypes – DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. So, one may get sick again of dengue if the next infection is a different serotype from the previous. This especially happens if exposure occurs 2-3 months after recovery when the temporary immunity to a different serotype wanes. However, for the same serotype (as the previous infection), immunity lasts a lifetime.

A subsequent (second) dengue infection is also to be watched out for since it is known to have more complications for the patient.

An Aedes aegypti mosquito breeds by laying their eggs in stagnant water, be it clean or dirty. Basins, pots, jars and rain gutters are among the typical containers and surfaces around the house where water can stagnate. That is why it is important to drain these containers of water or to keep them tightly closed with a lid at all times.
