Letters to Home is more than a FAHM celebration. It is a calling to collectively reconnect with our roots, to know where we came from and why, and to create an identity within the diaspora that is woven from our shared stories, carried in our gathering, and passed down for generations to come.

Kaela Malaki, founder of Kasama Markets and Lola Severina, and Chelsey Solemsaas, Co-Founder of Coffee Sarap, reflect on the women in their lineage who paved the way. These two Filipina American entrepreneurs came together fueled by a lack of representation in Denver to create a new ecosystem for us, by us.

Makahiya (mah-kah-he-yah) is Tagalog for “shy” or “shame” and is a common Filipino name of the plant Mimosa Pudica, an important species for native bees in the Philippines and known for it’s sensitive leaves when touched.
