PULLING STRAPS: USE THEM WHEN THEY’RE NEEDED.

In a conversation with TheRack.Co Product Specialist Ken, Head Coach Julius Naranjo of HDWL Academy shares why pulling straps should be used with purpose—not as a replacement for developing grip strength.

Straps can help athletes feel the weight and build confidence during pulls. But if you become too dependent on them, that confidence may not carry over when you lift without straps.

The goal? Use them when needed, while still building the strength to lift without them.

In Japanese homes, the Oni mask was never meant to frighten the people inside it protected.

Carved onto rooftops as onigawara, worn during Setsubun — the festival where people cast out misfortune with the chant “demons out, fortune in” — the Oni’s fierce face was always turned outward.

Not a threat but a guardian.

For a lifter, the demons aren’t out there. They’re closer — self-doubt whispering, “You’re not ready.” Laziness whispering, “Put it off until tomorrow.”

The Oni’s job is to cast those out.

Not to make you fearsome. To make room for what’s fragile enough to need guarding: your strength, still forming, still yours to define — until it grows, until it peaks — OŪKA.

Fierce guards the fragile.

FROM A BORROWED BRONZE TO A HARD-EARNED ONE. 🇵🇭

Years ago, a young Albert Ian Delos Santos held a borrowed bronze medal after a competition that left him in tears.

Today, that same young lifter stands on the Asian Games podium with a bronze medal of his own.

The country’s flag bearer and TheRack.Co sponsored athlete, Albert Ian Delos Santos, claimed bronze in the highly competitive Men’s 70kg division at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on September 26, 2026.

Ian lifted 141kg in the sn**ch and 183kg in the clean & jerk for a 324kg total — setting new Junior World and Junior Asian Records in both the clean & jerk and total.

From the grassroots to carrying the Philippine flag and finally earning a medal of his own on the Asian Games stage — this is another milestone in Ian’s journey.

Woot! Congratulations, Ian. 🇵🇭 Salamat sa pagbuhat sa bandila ng Pilipinas!

THE COMPETITION THAT BROUGHT A JUNIOR WORLD CHAMPION TO TEARS

Early on in life, Albert Ian Delos Santos experienced the bitter feeling of losing.

Coach Tony Agustin, then the tournament director of Batang Pinoy, witnessed a crying Ian. Find out what he did to make him stop crying.

At just 12 years old, Ian understood an early lesson: “More training so I could beat them all.”

Fast forward to today, that crying boy with a borrowed medal is now representing the Philippines at the 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, competing in the Men’s 70KG category on September 26 — this time, chasing a medal of his own.

To hard work, training and putting all the work to be excellent! 🇵🇭
