UNSEEN CRISIS: A mysterious kidney disease is striking young, healthy Texas workers in their 20s and 30s — sending them into kidney failure with no warning signs.
The condition, known as CKDu, has devastated agricultural communities in Central America and South Asia for decades, and doctors at Houston hospitals say they're now seeing the same pattern in undocumented laborers working construction and roofing in extreme heat.
According to a review of Harris County hospital records, roughly one in six emergency dialysis cases in uninsured or undocumented patients had no identifiable cause.
