🟢Popular Fitness Regime May Reduce Need For Prescription Drugs

A study on CrossFit suggests that it may help reduce the need for prescription drugs, particularly for individuals with long-term conditions like anxiety, depression, asthma, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and chronic pain. The research, involving 1,211 participants in the UK, found that 54% of those who had been taking medication prior to starting CrossFit reduced their dosage or stopped their medication entirely, with most improvements occurring within the first six months. Additionally, 40% of participants reported fewer doctor visits. CrossFit's combination of strength, aerobic, and functional exercises enhances physical fitness, alleviates pain, and improves mental health, which could explain the reduced reliance on medication. While the study's results are promising, it has limitations, including reliance on self-reported data and the lack of tracking other lifestyle changes. More research is needed to fully understand the impact of CrossFit on medication use and healthcare demands.

🟢Does Cold Weather Cause Colds? Here's Why You Really Get Sick in Winter

Cold weather itself does not directly cause colds, but it can make it easier to catch respiratory viruses like the common cold, flu, and COVID-19. These viruses thrive in colder temperatures and low humidity, which helps them stay infectious longer. Cold air also affects the outer membrane of viruses, making them easier to transmit between people. Additionally, dry winter air causes respiratory droplets to evaporate, allowing smaller particles to travel further and last longer.

In winter, people tend to spend more time indoors in close contact with others, which increases the spread of germs. Cold air can also weaken the immune response in the respiratory tract, making it easier for viruses to take hold. Less sunlight and physical activity in winter can further weaken the immune system.

To reduce the risk of illness, it's important to practice good hygiene, stay hydrated, eat a balanced diet, get enough sleep, and stay active. Using a humidifier and getting the flu and COVID-19 vaccines can also help.

🟢California reports more illnesses in people who drank raw milk. Here are the risks, according to health experts

Raw milk in California has been linked to at least 10 reported illnesses, but none have been attributed to bird flu. Despite claims that raw milk has health benefits, experts warn that it poses significant risks, as it can carry harmful bacteria like E. coli, salmonella, and listeria. The U.S. Department of Agriculture is increasing testing of raw milk to monitor bird flu, which has been detected in some milk samples. While raw milk enthusiasts argue it’s healthier or more flavorful, experts stress that pasteurization, which involves heating milk to kill harmful pathogens, greatly reduces health risks. Recent cases have also linked raw milk to outbreaks, including potential bird flu infections in animals. Health officials recommend avoiding raw milk, especially for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and pregnant individuals

🟢Male Cannabis Users Show Less Cognitive Decline, Study Finds

A decades-long study conducted by researchers at the University of Copenhagen involving over 5,000 Danish men has found no significant harmful effects of cannabis use on age-related cognitive decline. Participants first took Denmark's conscription board intelligence test between the ages of 18 and 26 and retook it around the age of 64. About 40% of participants reported trying cannabis, with roughly 10% using it frequently for less than a decade and 12% for a decade or more. The results showed that cannabis users experienced slightly less IQ decline (1.3 points) compared to nonusers, even after accounting for factors like education level, to***co smoking, and alcohol use. Most users had abstained for at least a year before follow-up testing, suggesting that the cognitive effects of cannabis may be reversible with prolonged abstinence. While the findings are encouraging and align with some prior research, further studies are needed to assess the effects on heavy, continuous users and understand the broader implications.

🟢Holding your p*e can have dangerous health risks, experts say

Experts warn that regularly holding in urine can have serious health risks, including urinary tract infections (UTIs), kidney damage, and bladder dysfunction. While occasionally postponing the urge to urinate is usually harmless, making a habit of it can weaken bladder muscles, making it harder to empty the bladder fully, and create a breeding ground for bacteria. Over time, this can lead to more infections, kidney damage, or conditions like hydronephrosis, where the kidneys swell from urine buildup. Holding p*e can also cause abdominal pain, cramping, or bladder stones. People with conditions like neurogenic bladder, older adults, and pregnant women are at higher risk. Experts advise listening to the body's signals and not delaying urination for extended periods. For those with urinary issues, seeking medical help for bladder training or other treatments is essential.

🟢Cocoa May Protect Against the Effects of Fatty Foods and Stress

A study from the University of Birmingham suggests that drinking cocoa high in antioxidants (flavanols) can help protect the cardiovascular system from the negative effects of high-fat meals and stress. In a trial with 23 adults, participants ate a high-fat meal and then underwent a stressful mental math test. Those who drank high-flavanol cocoa showed improved artery function, especially in the brachial artery, compared to those who drank low-flavanol cocoa.

The study found that high-flavanol cocoa helped reduce impairments in blood flow and artery dilation caused by stress and fatty foods. While more research is needed, these findings suggest that flavanol-rich cocoa may support cardiovascular health, especially during stressful situations or after consuming unhealthy meals.
