Samina, 42, asked: "I have been wearing glasses for the last several years. My number is -4 and -4.5. Lately, I have been thinking of getting LASIK done, but I have heard you can’t get it done after 40. Is that true?”
"This is a common misconception—that laser eye treatments are only suitable for people in their formative years. However, age is not necessarily a limiting factor for eligibility. While there is no upper age limit for laser eye surgery, certain age-related conditions, like cataract, glaucoma, and other eye issues, may affect a person's suitability for the procedure. Your prescription falls within the range that can be corrected by laser eye treatments. To determine your eligibility and the most suitable treatment option, Samina, you will need to undergo a comprehensive evaluation to assess your overall eye health. This includes specific tests to measure your corneal thickness and condition, and the stability of your prescription. Based on these findings, you will be advised on your eligibility for laser eye treatment and recommended the most appropriate procedure, whether laser-based or surgical," responded Dr. Sharmeen Akram, Consultant Ophthalmology, CMS.
