💊 MEDICINE OF THE DAY – DAY 19 | SALBUTAMOL

🌬️ Having wheezing, chest tightness, or sudden shortness of breath?
Many people with asthma or other breathing conditions may be familiar with Salbutamol. But do you know how it actually works?

Salbutamol (Albuterol) is a short-acting β₂-adrenergic receptor agonist (SABA) that helps relax the muscles around the airways, making it easier to breathe.

🔬 HOW DOES SALBUTAMOL WORK? (MOA)
Salbutamol stimulates β₂ receptors in the airways → increases cAMP → relaxes bronchial smooth muscle → helps open the airways.

📌 COMMON USES
• Relief of bronchospasm in asthma
• Relief of wheezing and breathing difficulty
• Bronchospasm associated with COPD
• Prevention of exercise-induced bronchospasm when prescribed

⚠️ COMMON SIDE EFFECTS
• Tremor/shaking
• Nervousness or feeling restless
• Headache
• Increased heart rate/palpitations
• Muscle cramps

🚨 IMPORTANT PRECAUTIONS
People with certain heart conditions, high blood pressure, diabetes, or thyroid problems may need additional caution. Always inform your doctor or pharmacist about your medical history and other medicines.

💡 PHARMACY TIP:
Salbutamol is generally used as a reliever/rescue medicine for sudden breathing symptoms. If you find yourself needing it more frequently than usual, it may indicate that your respiratory condition is not well controlled and you should speak with your doctor.

❗ Never exceed the prescribed dose, and seek urgent medical help if severe breathing difficulty does not improve with your prescribed reliever.

❤️ At LifeCare Point Pharmacy, we believe that understanding your medicine is an important part of using it safely.

💊 MEDICINE OF THE DAY | MONTELUKAST

🌬️ Asthma and allergies can affect your breathing, sleep, and everyday life. But how does Montelukast help?

Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist (LTRA) used for certain patients with asthma and allergic rhinitis. It helps reduce symptoms caused by leukotrienes, chemicals involved in airway inflammation and allergic responses.

🔬 Mechanism of Action (MOA):
Montelukast blocks the CysLT1 leukotriene receptor, helping reduce leukotriene-related airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, and mucus production.

📌 Common possible side effects:
• Headache
• Abdominal/stomach discomfort
• Nausea
• Fatigue

⚠️ Important Safety Information:
Montelukast has been associated with neuropsychiatric effects, including changes in mood or behavior, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, and, rarely, suicidal thoughts or behavior.

If you or a family member notices new or worsening mood, behavior, or sleep changes, contact a healthcare professional promptly.

🚨 Remember: Montelukast is not a rescue medicine for a sudden asthma attack. Patients who have been prescribed a quick-relief inhaler should use it as directed for acute symptoms.

💡 LifeCare Point Pharmacy Tip:
Take Montelukast exactly as prescribed and don't change or stop asthma treatment without discussing it with your doctor.

💊 MEDICINE OF THE DAY | PANTOPRAZOLE

🔥 Acidity, heartburn or acid reflux?
You may have heard of Pantoprazole—but knowing how it works and how to use it safely is just as important as knowing its name.

Pantoprazole belongs to a group of medicines called Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs). It reduces the production of stomach acid and may be prescribed for conditions such as GERD, acid reflux, erosive esophagitis, and certain stomach or duodenal ulcers.

🔬 How does Pantoprazole work?
It blocks the H⁺/K⁺ ATPase proton pump in the stomach's acid-producing cells, reducing gastric acid secretion.

📌 Possible side effects include:
• Headache
• Nausea
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Abdominal discomfort
• Gas/bloating

⚠️ With prolonged or inappropriate use, PPIs may be associated with certain complications, so long-term treatment should be reviewed by a healthcare professional.

💡 Pharmacy Tip:
Pantoprazole is generally taken before a meal, according to the prescribed schedule. Swallow delayed-release tablets whole unless your specific product instructions say otherwise.

❗ If you regularly experience heartburn, difficulty swallowing, unexplained weight loss, persistent vomiting, or blood/black stools, don't simply keep taking an acid medicine—seek medical evaluation.

💊 MEDICINE OF THE DAY | CLOPIDOGREL

❤️ Why is Clopidogrel prescribed after a heart attack, stroke, or certain heart procedures?

Clopidogrel is an antiplatelet medicine that helps prevent harmful blood clots from forming inside blood vessels. It is commonly prescribed for certain patients with coronary artery disease, previous heart attack or ischemic stroke, and after some coronary stent procedures.

🔬 How does it work?
Clopidogrel blocks the P2Y12 ADP receptor on platelets, reducing platelet activation and aggregation. In simple words, it makes platelets less likely to stick together and form a clot.

📌 Important points to know:
• Used to help prevent certain blood-clot-related cardiovascular events
• May be prescribed alone or with another antiplatelet medicine depending on the condition
• Bleeding is the most important adverse effect
• Easy bruising or nosebleeds may occur
• Black stools, vomiting blood, unusual heavy bleeding, or severe weakness require urgent medical attention
• Tell your doctor before surgery or dental procedures
• Some medicines can interact with Clopidogrel and affect its effectiveness or bleeding risk

⚠️ Never stop Clopidogrel on your own, particularly if it has been prescribed after a coronary stent. Stopping it without medical advice can increase the risk of serious clotting complications.

💡 LifeCare Point Pharmacy Tip:
If you are taking Clopidogrel, always tell your doctor or pharmacist about all other medicines and supplements you use.
