Despite the progress, more than 1,000 Pakistani children (newborns to 5 years of age) still die every day, with half of these deaths estimated to be from vaccine preventable diseases.

As one of its six priorities in Pakistan, UNICEF will continue its efforts to decrease child deaths through various projects with the government and other partners.

The new-born mortality rate in Pakistan is 55 per 1000 live births. It’s been stagnant for over three decades now.

Most of these deaths can be prevented through an integrated approach to mother and child health, hygiene, nutrition and protection.

UNICEF Pakistan is collaborating with Ministry of National Health Services Regulation and Coordination, and provincial Lady Health Worker and Mother and Child Healthcare (MNCH) programmes to improve facility and community based new-born care for enhanced new-born survival.

As a signatory of the Sustainable Development Goals (#SDGs), Pakistan also aims to reach the SDG No. 3 – Good Health and Wellbeing – target that asks for all countries to reduce new-born mortality to at least as low as 12 per 1,000 live births.
