*Open, uncovered, or overgrown wells pose severe risks to livestock, pets, and people. Key precautions prevent accidental falls into concealed pits and abandoned wells*
1. Install strong, solid covers (concrete, heavy metal grating, or reinforced wood) over all active and abandoned wells. Secure them so children or animals cannot dislodge them.
2. Build a sturdy perimeter fence or chest-high wall around well openings to prevent accidental stepping or grazing near edges.
3. Periodically clear thick brush, weeds, debris, and dry leaves around property boundaries to ensure hidden holes, open pits, or deteriorating covers remain fully visible.
4. Place clear warning signage around hazardous or abandoned deep pits on farmland and rural areas.
5. Avoid descending into dark, narrow wells or confined spaces without specialized air quality testing, harnesses, and proper ventilation, as toxic gases or low oxygen can be fatal.
6. Call emergency personnel (Rescue 1122 in Pakistan) right away when a person or animal is trapped in a deep well or pit.
