Could You Be Stopping Breathing While You Sleep? Obstructive sleep Apnea.
What actually happens when you stop breathing in your sleep? 😳
When you fall asleep, the muscles in your throat relax, causing your airway to become narrower. As air passes through, the tissues can vibrate and create the sound we know as **snoring**.
But sometimes the airway becomes so narrow that not enough air reaches the lungs. When this happens, your brain can briefly wake you up and reactivate the muscles that keep your airway open. You may not even remember these brief awakenings.
This is known as **obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)**.
In this video, we explain what happens inside your airway, why snoring occurs, and how the brain responds when breathing becomes restricted during sleep.
⚠️ If you or someone you know experiences loud snoring, gasping during sleep, or repeated breathing pauses, consider discussing it with a healthcare professional.
