Three things I would never assume as a doctor just because my fasting sugar is normal.

Number 1: I would never assume I cannot have diabetes.

Fasting sugar is only one measurement. Some people have abnormal blood sugar after meals even when their fasting level is normal.

Number 2: I would never ignore symptoms just because one report looks fine.

Excessive thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, and blurred vision deserve proper assessment.

Number 3: I would never rely on a single test when the clinical picture doesn’t add up.

An HbA1c test reflects average blood sugar over roughly the past two to three months. Depending on the situation, your doctor may recommend HbA1c, repeat fasting glucose, or an oral glucose tolerance test.

But remember: a normal fasting result does not automatically mean you have diabetes either. The right test depends on your symptoms and risk factors.

Don’t diagnose yourself from one number. Interpret the test in context.

Three things I would never ignore as a doctor if I kept waking up gasping for air.

Number 1: I would never assume it’s just a bad dream.

If you wake up choking, snoring loudly, or feeling like you’ve stopped breathing, you could have obstructive sleep apnoea. Your airway repeatedly narrows or closes during sleep.

Number 2: I would never ignore it if I also needed extra pillows to breathe.

Waking up breathless and needing to sit upright to catch your breath can be a sign of heart failure or another serious heart or lung problem.

Number 3: I would never keep ignoring repeated episodes.

Sleep apnoea, heart problems, and other conditions need different investigations and treatments. The pattern of symptoms matters.

If severe breathlessness happens suddenly, especially with chest pain, fainting, or blue lips, seek emergency care.

Remember: waking up gasping isn’t always harmless. Your body may be warning you that something is wrong.

Three things I would never ignore as a doctor when it comes to fatty liver.

Number 1: Thinking that if I don’t drink alcohol, I can’t develop fatty liver.

Wrong. Fatty liver can develop in people who never drink alcohol, especially with abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, or abnormal cholesterol.

Number 2: Assuming my liver is healthy just because I have no symptoms.

Fatty liver often causes no symptoms in its early stages. You can feel completely fine while liver damage is developing.

Number 3: Ignoring it because my liver enzymes are normal.

Normal ALT and AST levels do not completely rule out significant liver disease or fibrosis.

The good news? Losing excess weight, exercising regularly, controlling blood sugar, and improving your diet can help.

Remember: you don’t need alcohol to develop fatty liver, and you don’t need symptoms to have a liver problem.

Three sleep mistakes I would never make as a doctor.

Number 1: Sleeping only 4–5 hours every night and telling myself, “I’ll recover on Sunday.”

Sleeping longer on the weekend can help reduce sleepiness, but it doesn’t reliably reverse all the effects of repeated sleep deprivation.

Number 2: Thinking that sleeping 12 hours on Sunday makes chronic sleep deprivation harmless.

Your body doesn’t work like a bank account where you can repay every lost hour in one transaction.

Number 3: Ignoring my sleep schedule throughout the week.

Irregular sleep can disrupt your body clock, affect concentration, and make it harder to maintain healthy routines.

For most adults, aim for 7–9 hours of sleep regularly, not just on weekends.

Remember: you can catch up on some rest, but you can’t rely on Sunday to fix an entire week of poor sleep.

If your heart races for no reason this video is for you

In Urdu

12/10/2026

You’re sitting comfortably, doing absolutely nothing…

And suddenly, your heart starts racing.

Your first thought might be: ‘Is it anxiety?’

But don’t blame every racing heartbeat on stress.

Caffeine, ni****ne, dehydration, fever and anxiety can all increase your heart rate.

But sometimes, the problem is an abnormal heart rhythm, called an arrhythmia.

Here’s an important clue: does your heartbeat suddenly switch on like a light, race rapidly, and then suddenly stop? That pattern can suggest an arrhythmia, although it doesn’t prove one.

If this keeps happening, an ECG and sometimes ambulatory monitoring may help identify the cause.

And if a racing heartbeat comes with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting or near-fainting, seek urgent medical attention.

So next time your heart starts racing, don’t automatically assume it’s anxiety.

Your heartbeat is a symptom. The important question is why it’s happening.

Your oxygen is 98%…

but you still feel like you can’t get enough air.

So someone tells you, ‘Your oxygen is normal. There’s nothing wrong.’

That’s not necessarily true.

Oxygen saturation tells us how much oxygen is attached to your blood’s hemoglobin.

It does not tell us everything about why you’re breathless.

You could have asthma, anemia, heart disease, deconditioning, anxiety, or problems with how your body responds to exertion—and your oxygen can still be completely normal.

Even some people with significant lung disease can maintain a normal oxygen level, particularly at rest.

That’s why breathlessness shouldn’t be judged by the pulse oximeter alone.

We need to ask:

When does it happen? At rest or with exertion? How long has it been happening? Are there other symptoms?

So if you’re breathless but your oximeter says 98%:

Don’t ignore the symptom—and don’t worship the number.

A normal oxygen reading is reassuring.

It is not a diagnosis.
