Why you should donate blood | Blood donation during COVID

According to WHO statistics, about 118.4 million blood donations are collected globally, but during the COVID pandemic, these numbers have decreased. This decline has occurred due to a general lack of awareness among the public regarding blood donation protocols during COVID. Other than this a general apprehension regarding blood donation in first time donors has also been detrimental to the blood donation effort. These misconceptions can only be removed by spreading awareness regarding blood donation and its benefits.

"And whoever saves one life, it is as if he had saved mankind entirely."(Quran 5:32) .

According to WHO statistics, about 118.4 million blood donations are collected globally, half of which are in high-income countries. Many of these countries collect most of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid blood donors. While in Pakistan, 3.5 million donations of blood are collected annually, 90 per cent of which are from relatives of the patients while only 10 per cent are from voluntary donors. This is mostly due to lack of awareness regarding blood donation.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a large burden was put on the blood banks and the lives of thousands of patients of diseases like thalassemia were in danger. During these tough times some people donated blood regularly and helped save lives of countless people requiring blood. Today we are celebrating the bravery and courage of the best blood donors of the year 2020.
