โItโs probably just an infection.โ Plenty of women in Pakistan have told themselves exactly that, and then waited for antibiotics to do the work. Dr. Madiha Hashmi, medical oncologist, meets these women at stage 3 and 4. Some were scared, some were worried about the cost, and some simply felt too embarrassed to say anything at home. She also meets young women who walked in with triple negative breast cancer, one of the harder kinds, and who now come back every few months only for a routine check. They are cancer-free. What separated them from the others was time.
When breast cancer is found at stage 1 or 2, about 9 in 10 patients survive.
So what can you do today? Spend five minutes checking yourself, and begin at 20 if you havenโt. If something feels different, tell someone at home, then see a doctor.
