🚶‍♂️ **Are You Really as Physically Active and Fit as You Think?**

Many people believe they are physically active because they walk regularly, swim occasionally or attend a weekly exercise class.

But what happens when I ask them to perform simple movements, like getting up from the floor, doing a squat or reacting quickly to recover their balance?

😮 Many are shocked to discover what their bodies can no longer do!

The worrying part? **We can lose strength, balance, mobility and agility so gradually that we don't even notice.**

Unfortunately, many people only become aware of these limitations after experiencing a fall or serious injury.

But it doesn't have to be this way!

💚 In my latest article, I share real experiences from my coaching work at Empowered Ageing, including a personal story about my father, and explain why being active doesn't always mean being physically capable.

**Don't wait for a fall to discover your limitations.**

💬 I'd love to hear your thoughts. Have you ever discovered that a movement you thought was easy had become surprisingly difficult?

Walking is valuable. But is walking alone enough to keep us strong, capable and physically prepared for the demands of daily life as we age?
In “Is Walking Really Enough? - How Sedentary Living Became the New Normal”, Arlindo Martins will challenge the modern idea of what it means to be “active” and explore what the body really needs to maintain capability and health through ageing.
Arlindo is the founder of Empowered Ageing and a Movement Specialist with a background in Sports Science and almost 40 years of teaching and coaching experience. Over the last decade, his work has increasingly focused on helping mature adults build strength, mobility, balance, coordination, confidence and independence through movement.

Forward Safe Landing | Foundations • Autonomy • Agility

If you fall forward, do your arms know how to respond?

Strength, balance, coordination and reaction can help reduce fall risk — but no training can prevent every fall. That is why, when appropriate, Empowered Ageing also explores how the body can interact with the ground more safely.

This Movement Lesson is part of our Landing Safely (Fall Prevention) training area and is inspired by martial arts and combat sports, especially Judo and Aikido.

🔹 FOUNDATIONS — Protective arm position and controlled descent close to the floor
🔹 AUTONOMY — Forward landing from kneeling onto suitable mats
🔹 AGILITY — Carefully supervised simulated forward fall from standing/walking onto thick gymnastics mats

The objective is not to make everyone perform the most difficult version. The appropriate level depends on the person's health, physical capacity, experience and confidence.

We cannot prevent every fall, but we can train how the body responds.

⚠️ EDUCATIONAL CONTENT ONLY
This video demonstrates examples from the Empowered Ageing Training System. It is not a follow-along workout, a home fall-practice tutorial or an individual exercise prescription. Do not intentionally practise falling from kneeling, standing or walking based only on this video. These drills require suitable mats, progressive instruction and appropriate supervision. Anyone who independently attempts a demonstrated movement does so at their own discretion and risk.

Physical symptoms can lead us to ask questions not only about the body, but also about how we experience and respond to life.
In his second session, Luís Martins Simões will present a reflective perspective on physical symptoms and the central nervous system, asking how our sense of direction and our relationship with authority might relate to nervous-system balance.
This session is offered as a perspective for reflection and discussion within a wider seminar on healthy ageing. It sits alongside the event’s other viewpoints on movement, breathing, habits, personalised health and everyday action.

At 76 years old, Ken is showing something very important:

The body can still adapt.

The nervous system can still learn.

Reaction and movement speed can still improve.

In January 2026, during the Empowered Ageing Reaction Lights Test, Ken touched 12 lights in 30 seconds.

After approximately three months of structured Empowered Ageing training, he touched 17 lights in the same 30-second test.

That is 5 more lights - approximately 41.7% more than his baseline result.

The Reaction Lights Test challenges visual attention, reaction speed, decision-making, agility, balance under time pressure and the ability to connect the brain and body quickly.

Why does this matter in daily life?

Because better reaction and movement adaptability can support:
• quicker responses to unexpected situations
• better stepping and directional changes
• improved confidence when moving around obstacles
• stronger connection between vision, brain and body
• better balance reactions and movement confidence

This is not about perfection.

It is not about becoming "young again".

It is about real, measurable progress.

Ken's result shows that, with consistent and appropriate training, the nervous system can continue to adapt and respond better - even later in life.

The body remains adaptable.

The brain and body can still learn.

Ageing does not mean stagnation.

We breathe every minute of every day - but how often do we think about the relationship between breathing and the rest of the body?
In “The Breath-Body Connection”, physiotherapist Tânia Camilo will explore how the diaphragm, movement and the fascial system interact, and will share simple ways to use breathing and movement more consciously as we age.
Tânia is a physiotherapist and the Technical Director and CEO of Tecnifisio in Lagos. Her professional background includes respiratory physiotherapy, neurological and paediatric physiotherapy, women’s and pelvic health, myofascial approaches, aquatic physiotherapy and Modified Pilates.

From Baby Beast to Beast Activations | Foundations • Autonomy • Agility

Can you stabilise your body while one limb moves?

This Movement Lesson is based specifically on the Animal Flow Training System, created by Mike Fitch, and explores Beast Activation through the three Empowered Ageing levels.

Stability is not about staying rigid. It means controlling the body while movement happens — challenging core control, shoulder and hip stability, weight transfer and cross-body coordination. These qualities can support gait, balance and more confident floor movement.

🔹 FOUNDATIONS — Baby Beast Activation
🔹 AUTONOMY — Beast Activation (higher knees)
🔹 AGILITY — Beast Activation (lower knees)

The objective isn't to reach the most difficult version. It is to find the right challenge for your body today and progressively build more control, confidence and movement options.

There can be many steps and variations between these examples because every person is different — and the training should adapt to the person, not the person to the training.

👉 Small, controlled movements can build big confidence. Keep practising.

This video shows examples from the Empowered Ageing Training System. It is not an individual exercise prescription or a follow-along online workout, and not every movement is appropriate for every person. Individual assessment and adaptation are provided through our in-person services.

If you independently attempt movements shown in these educational videos, you do so at your own discretion and risk. Empowered Ageing cannot accept responsibility for injury, pain or other adverse effects resulting from doing so.

Where we place our attention can influence the way we experience our lives. But what might that mean for ageing, happiness and personal evolution?
In “Age, Happiness and Evolution - The Choice We All Have”, Luís Martins Simões will invite us to reflect on how attention, awareness and personal choice may shape our experience of life and ageing.
Luís has worked internationally since 1987 in leadership, communication, motivation and emotional intelligence. His work later expanded into personal development, consciousness and the relationship between mind and body, with a recurring focus on moving beyond repetitive patterns towards more conscious ways of living.

At 89, Mike improved his Beach Ball Racquet Test result by 40%.

In January 2026, he achieved 30 valid hits in 60 seconds. At his reassessment in May 2026, he achieved 42 valid hits in the same time.

That is 12 more successful hits — a 40% improvement from his starting result.

The Beach Ball Racquet Test is an internal Empowered Ageing coordination assessment. It challenges rhythm, timing, hand-eye coordination, visual tracking and balance while moving.

These are movement skills we use beyond exercise: following a moving object, reaching for something, or coordinating our steps and hands during everyday activities.

Mike had lived most of his life without regular physical training. Yet, at 89, he continues to learn and make measurable progress.

At Empowered Ageing, we adapt movement practice to each person’s abilities, limitations and goals, helping mature adults build confidence and work towards greater autonomy in everyday life.

Thank you, Mike, for your commitment and for allowing us to share your journey.

Could information in our genetic code help us make more personalised everyday health choices?
In “The Blueprint Beneath Your Health”, Brigitte Spurgeon will offer an introduction to nutrigenomics and explore how genetic information can provide additional clues when looking at issues such as fatigue, inflammation and persistent health challenges.
The session is designed as a first look at how personalised information may support more informed choices - not as a replacement for medical care, but as another perspective within a broader approach to health.
Brigitte works in nutrigenomics, functional genomics and personalised nutrition, combining genetic testing, functional laboratory analysis and nutrition strategies in her professional practice.
