A whole grain contains all three key parts of the grain: the bran, germ and endosperm. This means it generally provides more fibre, vitamins, minerals, and plant nutrients.
A refined grain has had the bran and germ removed during processing. This gives it a softer texture and longer shelf life, but it also removes much of the fibre and some nutrients.
Choosing more whole grains may support better digestion, help you feel fuller for longer, and support heart health as part of a balanced diet.
That doesnโt mean you need to avoid refined grains completely. Start small by swapping white bread for wholemeal bread, white rice for brown rice, or regular pasta for wholegrain pasta.
For everyday meals, make whole grains your go-to more often.
