Artesans ResQ EU NGO (non-governmental organization) that transport critical patients of all ages from any point in Ukraine and provide critical care transfer trainings.

Artesans-ResQ has been active in Ukraine for two years now and specialises in the intensive care transport of injured and sick people. The project covers three main areas:
• Coordinative support
• Transportmission
• Trainingsmission
In this project, we are collaborating with the WHO, the Ukrainian Ministry of Health and the European Commission.Artesans-ResQ provides its own intensive care transport capacities. Regular outpatient clinics and large-capacity intensive care transporters in the form of buses are used, which can transport up to five ventilated patients at the same time. Our vehicles are in use around the clock and have already transferred 350 patients over a total distance of around 38,000 km this year. We are called to the most complex medical cases.

From 27 to 29 August, the Artesans-ResQ Ukraine Training Center in Dnipro hosted another Critical Care Transport course, delivered in partnership with the Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Center for Emergency Medical Care and Disaster Medicine of the MoH of Ukraine and the World Health Organization.

The group brought together 20 medical professionals with different levels of experience: some had already taken part in CCT missions, while for others this was their first step toward working with critically ill patients during transport. This mix of backgrounds creates an opportunity to discuss real-life cases, exchange experience, and at the same time practise shared approaches and algorithms for critical care transport.

Read what participants had to say about the training in the carousel. 👉

The need for this type of training remains high. EMS teams regularly transport critically ill patients between hospitals, but dedicated CCT training is still not provided on a systematic basis.

That is why, over the three days, the course focused primarily on practical skills: airway management, mechanical ventilation, haemodynamic support, the use of vasopressors and infusion pumps, analgesia and sedation, structured patient handover using the TAKEOVER approach, and effective teamwork.

Particular attention was also given to scenarios involving sudden deterioration in a patient’s condition, followed by debriefings in which participants reviewed team decisions, common mistakes, and appropriate response algorithms.

We are grateful to the partners whose support makes these trainings possible: Міністерство охорони здоров'я України, World Health Organization Ukraine World Health Organization (WHO) and ДЗ "УНПЦ ЕМД та МК МОЗ України" — for supporting the development of critical care transport in Ukraine and helping strengthen the quality of care throughout every stage of the patient pathway.

“We have to do the best we can with what we have, wherever we are.”

Stanislav is an anesthesiologist with the Artesans-ResQ Ukraine team. In this video, he shares how he found his way into medicine, how he first learned about ARQ and eventually joined the team, and what working with critically ill patients means to him.

Medicine had been part of his life since childhood: both his mother and grandmother worked as nurses, and his mother still does. But his own interest in the profession began somewhat unexpectedly after watching House, M.D. Over time, that interest grew into medical studies, clinical practice, and a career in anesthesiology.

Stanislav knew about Artesans-ResQ before becoming part of the team: he had seen our vehicles around Dnipro, followed our posts, and heard about our work from colleagues. In the autumn of 2024, he completed a critical care transport course, followed by an internship, and later joined the team as a physician.

Today, he works both on critical care patient transfers and as an instructor on critical care transport training courses, teaching healthcare professionals across different regions of Ukraine.

For Stanislav, one of the most valuable parts of this work is the support of the team and volunteers.

“Together, we can make something this significant possible,” he says, thanking everyone who stands alongside the team.

Watch the video to learn more about his journey, some of the most challenging transfers he has been part of, the team behind the work, and why this work matters.

Artesans-ResQ Ukraine transported its youngest-ever patient — a newborn just five hours old.

Neonatal transport is one of the most complex areas of critical care transport (CCT). During the first hours and days of life, a newborn’s condition is particularly sensitive to changes, which means every aspect of transport requires careful management.

Respiratory support is one of the key considerations. Newborn lungs are especially vulnerable to overdistension, so our team selected a pressure-controlled ventilation mode and adjusted medication dosages according to the baby’s body weight.

Temperature control is equally important. Hypothermia can worsen a newborn’s condition, which is why we use specialized BabyPod and NeoPod transport systems. They help maintain a stable temperature while allowing continuous monitoring, respiratory support, and intensive care throughout the journey.

Only a limited number of medical facilities in Ukraine can provide highly specialized care for critically ill newborns. Safe interfacility transport is therefore an essential part of treatment and requires a specialized team, appropriate equipment, and close coordination between hospitals.

We are seeing a growing need for neonatal critical care transport — and with it, an increasing need for trained teams, dedicated equipment, and well-established cooperation between healthcare facilities.

We shared the story of this mission in the carousel. Today, our little patient is already home with their family.

None of these transports would be possible without our partners:

World Health Organization Ukraine World Health Organization (WHO) — our key institutional partner. Together, we developed Ukraine’s first training standards for the transport of critically ill patients.

Міністерство охорони здоров'я України — our partner within the MEDEVAC programme and in the national recognition of our training programme.

ДЗ "УНПЦ ЕМД та МК МОЗ України" — our partner in strengthening critical care transport and training medical teams.

Special thanks to Регіональний медичний центр родинного здоров'я and Дніпропетровський обласний центр екстреної медицини for their rapid communication and close coordination throughout this mission.

From 29 to 31 July, Artesans-ResQ Ukraine delivered the “Critical Care Transport” training course at the Training Center in Kropyvnytskyi.

The three-day course was built around situations that emergency medical teams may encounter during real interfacility transports. 15 EMS professionals with different levels of experience in managing critically ill patients took part.

The request from local teams was clear: to make patient transport safer and to standardize team workflows. A significant part of the course therefore focused on pre-transport preparation, including:

• assessing the patient’s readiness for transport;
• checking equipment and backup supplies;
• clearly assigning roles within the team;
• ensuring structured information exchange between healthcare facilities.

The next stage focused on simulated clinical scenarios. Participants practiced airway management and mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic stabilization, the use of vasopressors and infusion pumps, and analgesia and sedation. Particular attention was also given to structured patient handover using the TAKEOVER protocol and to effective teamwork.

One of the most challenging scenarios involved the sudden deterioration of an intubated patient. In such circumstances, the team must simultaneously assess the patient’s condition, maintain hemodynamic stability, monitor ventilation, and identify the cause of deterioration— all within the limited space and resources available during transport.

Debriefings after the simulations helped identify several recurring gaps: insufficient stabilization before departure, incomplete checks of equipment and backup supplies, unclear allocation of team roles, and unstructured handovers.

This is precisely why hands-on training is essential. It allows teams to identify, analyze, and correct mistakes in a controlled environment so that, during real missions, they can act with greater confidence, coordination, and consistency.

The results confirm this:
• 80% of participants reported improved preparedness after the course;
• understanding of key CCT principles reached 93.6%;
• all participants rated the course quality and organization 5/5;
• more than 40% plan to change aspects of their practice after the course.

EMS teams regularly transport critically ill patients, but dedicated preparation for CCT is not always systematic. Training of this kind is essential for regularly practicing complex clinical scenarios, strengthening teamwork, and establishing standardized approaches to the transport of critically ill patients.

We are grateful to our partners, whose support makes this work possible: Міністерство охорони здоров'я України, World Health Organization Ukraine, and ДЗ "УНПЦ ЕМД та МК МОЗ України", who help us strengthen the critical care transport system and improve the quality of care throughout every stage of the patient journey.

We would also like to express our particular gratitude to КНП "ЦЕМД та МК у Кіровоградській області КОР" and its Director, Andrii Tabachuk for their support in organizing and delivering the training in Kropyvnytskyi.

🇬🇧In the first half of 2026, our work increasingly focused on the most complex transfers — ICU Level 3 patients who need continuous intensive care throughout the journey.

We transported more children, newborns and patients with severe burns. Long-distance and cross-border MEDEVAC missions also became more frequent, often keeping our teams and ambulances on the road for many hours or even more than a day. As demand continues to exceed our capacity, expanding our teams and technical resources remains a key priority.

At the same time, we continued to train healthcare professionals across Ukraine and share Ukrainian CCT expertise internationally — at the Japanese Association for Disaster Medicine conference, in Hamburg with VCU Health, and through research with Charles Sturt University.
