Why It’s Time to End the STI Stigma | Care2 Causes

It's time to end stigma surrounding sexually transmitted infections, including HBV. What makes it even harder with chronic HBV is that it is that most people living with the virus were infected at birth or during early childhood. HBV is not just a sexually transmitted disease. http://ow.ly/En2y50nFqIq

Wishing you the best festive season but remember to talk to your family and friends about the importance of knowing their Hepatitis B status.

18/12/2018

We take this opportunity to thank all our partners and friends who have been there for us in 2018. 2018 has had its own challenges and achievements. We shall dwell much on the achievements. We saw more political will and commitment from government. WHO mission to Uganda that was remarkable as the national planning process for viral hepatitis was enhanced. We saw the launch of the free viral load testing for Hepatitis B at Uganda National Health Laboratories - UNHLS, we saw the final draft of the treatment guidelines being approved by Minstry of Health top management, we were able to participate in the WHO regional and Global consultations and workshops, we saw another milestone in media coverage which intensified our advicacy efforts, and with support from Gilead Sciences we have been able to train again more than 800 health workers together with Uganda Gastroenterology Society and we hope next year will be more than 2018. We are proud to be part of the organisers coordinating the first ever African Hepatitis Summit 2019 happening in Kampala from 18-20June, 2019.

We dont take this for granted but above all we thank our very committed board of directors chaired by Prof Ponsiano Ocama and his team, our hard working volunteers @Bashira Nalubega, @Richard Mukasa, @Birungi Roset, @Bwambale Charles and @Kenneth Kabagambe.

We thank the Ministry of Health under the leadership of Hon Dr Jane Ruth Aceng for the continued support and guidance at the top of MoH.

We wish you all a happy festive season.

We applaud the Ministry of Health and partners for this very important milestone in monitoring of patients. We need now to strengthen the awareness and scale up screening so that more people living with Hepatitis B can be identified.

On behalf of Ministry of Health, Minister for Health, Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, Permanent Secretary, Dr. Diana Atwine and Head Of CPHL, Susan Nabadda commissioned two laboratories; National Heme Path Flow Cytometry Lab and Hepatitis B viral load Lab.

The National Heme Path Flow Cytometry lab will help improve diagnosis of Blood cancers especially lymphomas and leukemias.

This method detects the presence and extent of cancers even minimal residual disease-small number of cancer cells that may remain after treatment.

The Hepatitis B Viral load Laboratory 🔬 will strengthen the country’s response to Viral Hepatitis B.

Three Laboratories in Kiryandongo General Hospital, Kayunga General Hospital and St. Raphael of St. Francis Nsambya Hospital have received also International accreditation.

Accreditation means that the laboratory has provided objective evidence that it has quality and competence to provide services to customers.

Why “Hep B” vaccination needs to be “Plan A” in the fight against liver cancer

"Why “Hep B” vaccination needs to be “Plan A” in the fight against liver cancer," discussing vaccine coverage of newborns with the birth dose, via Deputy CEO of GAVI (provider of the Pentavalent vaccine). Hopefully this means GAVI will also be providing the birth dose of the vaccine for facility births. This would be huge in Africa, though there would still be a large gap babies in at-home births. Time to ask GAVI, "What are your plans for the birth dose in Africa?" http://ow.ly/FBhc30m3Smk

Today, women are nearly half as likely to die during childbirth or from pregnancy-related complications than their mothers. Much of this progress is attributable to the fact that more women give birth in hospitals and health facilities with skilled birth attendants present.

Because a person chronically infected with hepatitis B may show no symptoms for decades, it is very possible one may learn of their infection through a routine screening for a blood donation or screening based on abnormal liver function tests - even if they feel completely fine. How did you learn of your HBV infection? http://ow.ly/k47w30idDke

Ignoring and neglecting hepatitis B can be dangerous and lead to liver cancer, according to Nigerian physician Ramon Moronkola. The sooner you are tested and learn your status, the better. Get treatment if needed. Get family tested and prevent transmission to the next generation. Continue with regular monitoring of HBV and liver cancer screening. Disagree with the statement that HBV lives on surfaces for months. It lives for about a week. HBV is vaccine preventable along with simple prevention methods and general also being important. http://ow.ly/JP3B30lcjxp

On World Hepatitis Day 28th July we joined the rest of the world to mark yet another milestone in viral hepatitis movement. We offered free testing and vaccination in a bid to #Findingthemissingmillions and we are of course to overwhelmed by the huge numbers managed to screen 725 people out of which 25 were found Hepatitis B surface antigen positive and the rest were given free vaccination against Hepatitis B.

We want to thank National Medical Stores, Uganda for the medical supplies, Bwera Hospital for providing the man power, Great Lakes Peace Center, Uganda, Gittoes Pharmaceuticals and Kyampara HCII where the activity was done. Indeed it was important as the positives were followed up by linking them to Bwera Hospital for further management.
