Awesome story about the David Cowen and Aaron Shoemaker (All Hands On) team on Atlanta’s channel 46 news at 4:00pm. The State of Georgia, Governor Kemp, and so many more of us should be proud of the groundbreaking job you all are doing. I am honored to have been any part of what has grown and will keep growing. Love you guys!
Today experience ...
Sharing here what I posted on my own page earlier today. Video to follow in comments. ** ** ** ** Dear US ASL Interpreters and CDIs, As you may know by now, Heather Hutter and I coordinated a training that took place in MA yesterday. We brought Aaron Shoemaker and David Cowan from All Hands On to deliver their Active Shooter Response Training to just over 30 local interpreters and Deaf community members. This letter is to those of you who haven’t brought AHO to your community yet: do it. The training was as fantastic as it was important - it was highly interactive, the presenters’ styles were engaging and respectful, and the material they covered was life-changing. I can’t recommend them, and this training, highly enough. If you’re thinking, “but I took the online training that Aaron presented for RID,” I’m here to tell you that’s not enough. With the simulated active shooter situations throughout the day, I learned where I feel the crisis in my body, which is essential information to know about oneself. With the tourniquet practice, I now feel competent to apply one in less than 30 seconds - for myself and for others. How do you know how tight to make the tourniquet? When the bleeding stops. How do you know when to stop packing the wound? When the bleeding stops. …things I never knew until yesterday. Being there and practicing on others taught me that if I’m ever needing to apply one to other people, one thing I’ll need to do is ignore their screams - it’s a painful thing, and they’ll already be screaming. My heart will want to stop causing them any more pain, but I’ll need to stay focused and make that thing as tight as I can get it. …these are all things I couldn’t get out of an online training. Also, I ended up hurting myself during one of the simulations, as I was trying to flee. That in and of itself is an important lesson. I often think about keeping myself active to keep me healthy and prevent disease, but it occurred to me yesterday that the difference between a sedentary lifestyle and an active one could be life-saving for myself and others. If you’re thinking, “but my organization provides their own training and I took one through them,” I’m telling you, that’s not enough. As a community we need to be on the same page - have the same vocabulary and an agreement about how we’ll work together in emergency situations. When we meet for an assignment, we need to start talking about our emergency action plans in our pre-conference discussions. Also, we had a few participants yesterday who had taken trainings elsewhere and who all agreed that this one was different, it was better, and it was worth it. Yesterday we talked about anything and everything related to active shooter situations. For example, in an emergency interpreting situation, it can’t be overstated how important it is to have your agency- or state-issued ID badge. You don’t want to spend any time having your access to a site blocked because you don’t have proper ID. We also covered some of the ethics related to these situations. We discussed, and I believe, that the moment an active shooter incident begins is the moment your job assignment ends. You then become another person in that situation, banding together with your team and the Deaf individual(s) for survival. Non-deaf interpreters, though the interpreting assignment is “over,” our moral duty to the Deaf people we’re with never ends. We need to continue to share environmental auditory information as best we can. It’s not all on us, though. Deaf folks, if you’re ever in this kind of situation with us, you take the lead too - ask us what we heard, how many gun shots, how far away they sounded, etc. etc. We’ll become an interdependent unit. And if we are ever thrust into an active shooting situation, we become victims/survivors and witnesses too. As such, we should never ever interpret events related to the incident (police, press, etc.). Not only is this good self-care, but we could also weaken the legal case if opposing counsel objects to our ability to interpret based on a conflict/bias, etc. These are just some of my takeaways from yesterday’s training. It was uncomfortable to be there. The topic sucks. This is a different kind of responsibility on us today that years ago our profession did not encounter. BUT, this is our new reality. While it’s extremely unlikely we’ll be shot (based on incident statistics), it’s becoming more and more apparent that we could very well be in a situation to help others. I ask everyone to consider bringing this training to your communities. Please. And Thank you.

This is to educate yourself and others how to prepare ourselves for disaster strikes like hurricanes, tornadoes, flood and blood! This training includes fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and First Aid, CPR, and AED. This is a total of 21 hours training on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. KRISTA: Few months ago, we requested All Hands On Director Aaron Shoemaker, ADA Coordinator James Aberson, Board Officers of CCGAD and GAD altogether to meet with Savannah CEMA Taskforce Team. We explained the necessity of CERT training for the Deaf Community. The CEMA Taskforce team were very attentive, listened, and asked many questions. Aaron explained how he set up his program, same exact as FEMA, however, deaf accesibility, COOL, NICE!! They didn't realize deaf people didn't have any training, hearing people do! OH! So they expressed interest, wanted us to email CEMA Director Dennis Jones to show interest in the deaf community. Parents with Deaf children, CODA, interpreters, etc. Please, I emphazise, please e-mail CEMA Director Dennis Jones: [email protected]. When you write an e-mail, see the subject line, put down DEAF CERT, prefer capital letters so he can see DEAF CERT. When people fill up his inbox expressing interest in this program. HEIDI: This is a season of disaster, all of the following, hurricanes, tornadoes, and flood. I emphaize you all please e-mail Dennis Jones and let him know the importance of Deaf Cert. If we fill up his inbox showing our interest, show him how important Deaf Cert is. He is willing to contact Aaron to collabrate and set up the event Deaf Cert. Understand, once this is set up, will require minimum of 25 people or up to register. He will proceed with this event, LET'S DO IT!! Dennis Jones: [email protected] (SUBJECT: DEAF CERT) PLEASE SHARE WITH EVERYBODY AND SPREAD THE WORD!! :)
Aaron are you doing the workshop in Catonsville, MD?
Thank you for invited me! I'm so thrill and looking forward what's ahead for more learning!
FYI, the teaching you all provided at DEAF CERT, Newnan, GA, has changed me! Although I still "feel" inept, you've given me courage; to step-out and provide assistance, comfort, real help; if it's truly needed or wanted. Since October's weekend course, there have been at least two family situations with my children AND another with a child/family during our Thanksgiving vacation when my instincts had some support from the good training provided me/I was of some use and help to those people. THANK YOU: ALL HANDS ON, FEMA, DEAF CERT, the Newnan Emergency Response Center director, and The Red Cross, for hosting well, training yourselves well, and passing-it-on to me and the others!---Susan Greco Have any of my other classmates from that weekend had similar experiences?
Hurricane Irma is now Category 5!!!! I recently made a VLOG, I mentioned Category 4... More details will..
