Our Healer Spotlight this week is A'Yonna Joyner is a dedicated sophomore at Hertford County Early College High School with a strong passion for healthcare and helping others. Outside of the classroom, she stays active through cheerleading, enjoys shopping, cooking, and baking, and values spending quality time with her family and friends. Following high school, A'Yonna plans to attend either North Carolina A&T State University or Alcorn State University to further her education and prepare for a career in nursing. Her ultimate dream is to become a labor and delivery travel nurse, allowing her to support mothers through childbirth, help bring new life into the world, and make a positive impact on families across different communities. Determined to work hard, continually learn, and overcome any challenges in her path, A'Yonna looks forward to building a successful future in healthcare and making her family proud.

🌊🔬 Learning Beyond the Classroom! 🐠🦈

Today, students from the HC Health Science Academy and HCHS Animal Science program had the exciting opportunity to tour the UNC Wilmington Marine Science Center! 🌊🐢

This educational experience allowed our students to explore the fascinating world of marine science, discover connections between science and animal health, and learn more about future career opportunities in science, biologists, and marine life conservation. 🧬🩺🐬

We are proud of our students for embracing opportunities to learn, explore, and connect classroom knowledge to real-world experiences! 💙🤍

A special thank you to UNC Wilmington for providing this opportunity to inspire the next generation of scientists, environmentalists and animal science specialists!

Meet Janiyah Sawyer, a 10th grader at Hertford County Early College High School and a vibrant future leader in healthcare! 💙✨

When Janiyah isn't dancing for the Soul Sonic Force Marching Band, doing hair, cooking, or making thoughtful gifts for her friends, she is working hard toward her passion for caregiving.

She has already kicked off her nursing journey in high school and plans to attend a four-year university after graduation. Her ultimate goal? To make a difference far and wide as a travel nurse or surgeon! 🩺✈️💉

🌟 Out & About in the Community! 🌟

The Health Sciences Academy had a fantastic day at Roanoke-Chowan Community College’s annual Fall Festival on Thursday October 15! We partnered with the NC Cooperative Extension to connect with students and faculty, sharing our passion for health science careers, and talk about the incredible opportunities our program offers. 🩺✨

We are always growing! Recruitment continues with rolling admissions open for current 9th and 10th graders.

A huge shoutout to our Early College High School (ECHS) Ambassador, Kiana Faison, who continued her special service project "Empower Her"—a personal care and feminine hygiene drive—by distributing essential items directly to festival participants! 💕

Together, we’re inspiring future health leaders and supporting our local community! 🏥💙

Our Healer Spotlight is back with Hertford County Early College 10th grader, Jada Eley! When she isn't dancing with the HCHS Sonic Force Marching Band, singing, or tackling creative projects, Jada is planning for her future. She aims to attend WSSU to study nursing and become a NICU nurse to give newborns the best start in life. 🩺✨

🚗💨 Are we here or are we there?

If it feels like we’ve been living out of our cars, buses and making apperances at flag football games, band performances, volleyball courts, cross county meets, soccer tournaments, shaking Pom Pom’s and board meetings … well, that's because we have! 😅 (our Healers are multi talented!)

But no matter how busy things get on the road, the grind never stops for the Health Science Academy. Over the last two weeks, we reviewed applications and officially accepted 10 NEW HEALERS into our cohort! 🎉👏

A HUGE welcome to our newest future healthcare leaders—we are so excited to have you on this journey with us! 🩺💙

🏥 A front-row seat to the future of healthcare! 🩺✨

On Wednesday, September 30, over 30 of our Health Science Academy Healers—along with prospective 9th graders—headed to ECU Health Medical Center for our annual tour and shadowing experience!
It was an action-packed day of discovery across all grade levels:

🏥 Prospective 9th Graders toured state-of-the-art hospital facilities and connected directly with healthcare professionals to see what a medical career is all about.

🥼 10th–12th Grade Healers scrubbed in for immersive shadowing experiences across departments like Mother/Baby, Oncology, ER, Cardiovascular, OR, Occupational & Recreational Therapy, and more!

Our students got down to the nitty-gritty of the specialties they're passionate about, gaining real-world insights and returning with incredible stories to share. We couldn't be prouder of these future healthcare champions! 👏💙

🥼 Future healthcare leaders in action! 🩺

On Tuesday, September 29, a group of our Health Science Academy students traveled to the ECU Brody School of Medicine for the Rural Education Institute STEM Lab experience!

Our students got hands-on experience in two incredible areas:

🔬 Pathology Lab: Explored the inner workings of human organs and examined how environmental factors impact human health.

🩺 Clinical Lab: Put their practical skills to the test by practicing CPR, first aid techniques, and operating ultrasound equipment.

Opportunities like this bring classroom learning to life and inspire the next generation of medical professionals. We are so proud of our students for stepping up, learning fast, and representing our academy so well! 👏✨
