Keep Kirsten Kicking

Keep Kirsten Kicking This page is to follow Kirsten Steele's Multivisceral (Intestinal) Transplant journey. Due to this condition, Kirsten has had several surgeries.

Kirsten Steele has a rare condition known as Gastroparesis (GP) (gastro-, “stomach” + -paresis, “partial paralysis”), also known as delayed gastric emptying. GP may occur when the muscles of the stomach and intestines do not properly function, resulting in food remaining in the stomach for an abnormally long time. Normally, the stomach contracts to move food down into the small intestine for additional digestion; however, GP causes food to then moves slowly or stops moving through the digestive tract. It was after her last surgery, the removal of her stomach from the digestive tract, that her doctors in Birmingham learned that these issues have affected her entire digestive tract. She now uses a feeding tube and a port to maintain nutritional intake. The feeding tube is used to help maintain her daily calories and the port for IV hydration and some medical issues. These are her main forms of feeding, but she does attempt to eat and drink every day.

Great information!

Earlier last week, we were proud to celebrate PA Donor Day! 💙💚

Held each year on August 1 (8/1), PA Donor Day highlights one incredible fact: just one organ donor can save up to eight lives.

For so many individuals and families in our community, the gift of organ donation can mean hope, more time, and an entirely new chapter.

PA Donor Day may only last 24 hours, but the difference one donation can make can last a lifetime. đź’š Learn more: https://donatelifepa.org/pa-donor-day/

Did you know you can save a life while you're still living?

Living donors can donate a kidney or a portion of their liver, intestine, lung, or pancreas to someone in need of a lifesaving transplant. For many patients, a living donor can mean a shorter wait, a better outcome, and a second chance at life.

Because Indianapolis is home to some of the most innovative healthcare facilities, leaders, and techniques in the world, Fair Haven has the incredible opportunity to provide compassionate housing to patients who are traveling far from home for critical medical care that can only happen here in the Circle City.

One of those cutting-edge treatments that has revolutionized testicular cancer care is called Retroperitoneal Lymph Node Dissection, or RPLND. RPLND surgery was pioneered at Indiana University in the 1960s. The IU Health urology team, in partnership with the Indiana University School of Medicine, is the world’s leading institution in pioneering the surgical technique. This nerve-sparing procedure has many real advantages for a male patient looking to undergo treatment for testicular cancer, including potentially avoiding chemotherapy, having a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery, and enduring less complications from surgery.

In just the past 12 months, Fair Haven has been able to house patients and their families from Texas, Kentucky, New Jersey, Virginia, Illinois, Alabama, Oregon, Tennessee, Florida, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana who traveled to Indianapolis for this life-saving testicular cancer surgery. Over the years we've also served patients from Canada, Iceland, India, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela who traveled to Indianapolis for testicular cancer surgery.

We are thankful to the doctors and amazing medical teams at IU Health, including Dr. Einhorn, Dr. Cary, and Dr. Masterson, who are leading the way in treating this disease and caring for patients in a comprehensive way!
