February is International Boost Self-Esteem Month. It’s common to struggle with self-esteem at some point in our lives. However, turning our thoughts around and thinking positively about ourselves has significant benefits. This month, join us in boosting self-esteem by following these tips.

1.) Avoid negative self-talk --------
When you spend your days thinking about everything you have done wrong or everything you have failed to do, those thoughts become a part of your internal narrative. They influence your level of self-esteem and the more it continues, the worse you feel. When you catch yourself mulling over every flaw, pause, recognize what you’re doing, and work to let it go. Reframe your internal conversation by thinking about strength.

2.) Stop comparing yourself to others --------
Former President Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” The achievements of someone else don’t take away from your own. Instead of letting comparison make you feel bad about yourself, take a step back and reflect on how far you have come.

3.) Exercise --------
When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These chemicals trigger a positive feeling. Something as simple as taking a short walk each day can improve your mood.

4.) Celebrate your strengths --------
Take a few minutes each day to think about something you did that you liked. This can be anything from a joke you told friends, to a meal you helped provide for loved ones or a skill that helped a client or colleague. Not only will this improve your current mood, but looking back on your thoughts can help improve your self-esteem in the long run.

Mindful eating during the holidays

The holidays are a great time for getting together with family and friends. Many holiday traditions revolve around eating, which can result in people overindulging during the holiday season. Practicing mindful eating during the holidays will help you to savor all the delicious food without overindulging, or feeling guilty.

Below are a few tips for practicing mindful eating:

* Before eating, check in with your body to determine if you are really hungry. Often times we eat for emotional reasons rather than for biological reasons.
* Take a couple of slow, deep breaths before starting your meal. This will help slow you down and draw your focus to your meal.
* Before you take your first bite, notice your food. What does it look and smell like? Part of truly enjoying food is noticing its appearance and smell in addition to its taste.
* Slow down your speed of eating. Often times we eat so fast, our brains do not have time to signal to us that we are full. Try putting down your fork or spoon between each bite.
* Chew your food well. Many people eat so fast that they barely chew their food enough to break it down. This puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on the rest of the digestive system which can result in digestive problems and bloating.

Did you know that during moments of lengthy summer activity, water may not be enough to rehydrate our bodies? Water alone does not effectively replace the potassium and sodium (electrolytes) that we lose when perspire. Popular “sports drinks” such as Gatorade and PowerAde are great choices for rehydration, but can get expensive and may not be readily available when needed. Why not try to create your own rehydration drink at home?

Rehydration Drink*

Measure all ingredients precisely. Small variations can make the drink less effective or even harmful. Mix the following:
1 quart (950 ml) water
½ teaspoon (2.5 g) baking soda
½ teaspoon (2.5 g) table salt
3 to 4 tablespoons (45 to 60 g) sugar
If available, ¼ teaspoon (1.25 g) salt substitute (such as “Lite Salt”)
* Do not give this homemade drink to children under age 12.
