Our 4 day event is complete! 2 day Dissection followed by 2 days of working with and learning from Janek Vluggen of the Vluggen Institute for Equine Osteopathy and Education as a team and figuring out cases we couldn't quite get worked out ourselves. So grateful to the veterinarians and to Janek and Ashley for coming out and working with us! These opportunities are so special and appreciated and we value them so highly. It's always so wonderful to collaborate with veterinarians and have the fields come together for the betterment of the horses. 🥰

2 day Dissection has completed! So grateful to the owner and the horse for allowing us the opportunity to learn from her. And grateful to Janek Vluggen for leading and Dr. Kayla, and Dr. Hannah for attending also! Such a privilege to have this chance to learn from a awesome case. Very much looking forward to the next one!

A recent farrier group discussion asked whether a farrier can become “over-educated” and start overcomplicating simple trimming and shoeing. It’s absolutely a question worth discussing and the majority of the comments were refreshing.

Years ago, farriers had to work with the information and educational opportunities available to them. Today, we are fortunate to have access to more research, technology, and opportunities to learn from one another. Research is helping us bridge science and the practice of farriery. That is a huge milestone for our industry.

When Yogi Sharp The Equine Documentalist was here a few weeks ago, he made a point that we have discussed in the past: he was sharing the best science and research available now, and if new evidence changes our understanding, he will share that too. That is how learning should work. We use the best information we have today while staying open to what we may learn tomorrow.

We know new evidence will come. When it does, we listen, work to understand it, adapt where it makes sense, and use what benefits the horse. Continuing education gives us the judgment to recognize when there is a better route and when what we are already doing remains the best option.

It’s easy to post on Facebook that you’re a farrier taking new clients. It’s much harder for a horse owner to know the experience, education, and judgment behind the work. That trust gives us a responsibility to keep learning.

There is no final destination in farriery.

Farriers, what have you learned that changed or strengthened your approach?

Horse owners, what would help you feel more informed about your horse’s hoof care?

We’d love to hear from both of you.
