I would like to share with you the RAI Resource Directory of LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness for the year 2020. This project was collaboration between the Rainbow Access Initiative, Inc. (RAI) and the State University of New York at Albany’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center (GSRC). The Directory covers communities in Albany, Rensselaer, and Schenectady.
Months of hard work went into making sure that resource lists of health and wellness providers who offer safe and inclusive experiences for their clients was compiled from providers and recommendations by the community itself. We hope to make this an ongoing project and continue editing and adding to it every year.
The Directory is interactive on our website. If you scroll through the lists of providers and click on their names you will be sent directly to the website they are affiliated with. We are interested in feedback on your experiences with these providers so please to not hesitate to reach out with anything you feel we should know.

Transgender people are especially vulnerable when it
comes to accessing social services and health care,
including finding doctors who respect and affirm their
identities. Many experience discrimination from medical providers, while others may simply struggle to access medical and mental health professionals who are knowledgeable in transgender-specific care. Others may be denied health insurance coverage to pursue transition related care or lack insurance altogether, especially those living in or near poverty and living in states where they do not have access to health care through Medicaid.
Data retrieved from HRC's "Fatal Anti-Transgender Violence in America in 2018" Report
Confronted with barriers in virtually every facet of life,
transgender people can be more more susceptible to
elevated mental health risks including depression, anxiety and suicide. Although higher rates of these issues have been erroneously (and maliciously) used to portray transgender people as “broken” or inherently flawed, it is actually the anti-trans stigma and rejection prevalent in our society that leads to higher rates of mental health challenges among transgender youth and adults.
