Ketogenic Diet

Today is National Keto Day! The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low-carb diet that is thought to have many health benefits in general, and it has been found to have benefits for seizure control in some people with epilepsy.

For today’s Teaching Tuesday, you can learn more about the ketogenic diet and epilepsy by visiting the pages below!

Note: We do not recommend making any dietary change without consulting your health care providers. Before making any drastic dietary change, it is imperative to consult your primary care physician and neurologist to weigh potential benefits or harm.

The "classic" ketogenic diet is a special high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet that helps to control seizures in some people.

Anyone with a brain can have epilepsy, and that includes Jennifer Tjr!

Jennifer received her diagnosis of tonic-clonic seizures at the age of 9 years old. Even after 24 years, she is still experiencing nocturnal seizures and is treating her epilepsy with a healthy lifestyle and medication. You may recognize Jennifer from when she hosted the Make It Fit, LLC Halloween Boot Camp Challenge Fundraiser for Epilepsy this past October! In addition to the Halloween fundraiser, Jennifer put effort into educating her community by giving speeches and presentations on epilepsy throughout grade school and college.

Despite her seizures, she strives to live a happy and healthy life. She is proud to say she recently fought through a difficult recovery from an auto accident that resulted in surgery and disruption to her seizure stability. She hopes in the future to receive her Cancer Exercise Specialist Certification with the American College of Sports Medicine, so she can help individuals and their families that are battling cancer.

Jennifer wants others to know that epilepsy is not a one-size-fits-all. Depending on the situation, epilepsy can affect someone on a daily basis, despite outward appearances. She emphasizes that no one should fear epilepsy; people with epilepsy can still accomplish great things!

According to media reports, the long-awaited game Cyberpunk 2077 (CD Projekt) contains several scenes with excessive strobe/flashing lights and sustained animated imagery that may affect those with photosensitive epilepsy. For those with photosensitive epilepsy — or are simply sensitive to flashing lights — and are planning to play the game once it is released on Dec. 10, please be advised that the strobe lights may trigger seizures in some people. #TeachingTuesday For this week’s Teaching Tuesday, we are highlighting NY Project Hope, New York’s COVID-19 Emotional Support Helpline and resource webpage. We don’t need to tell you that 2020 has been an intensely stressful and anxiety-inducing year. Studies have shown that depression rates have more than tripled during the pandemic. As we head deeper into the winter months, we also know that for some, seasonal affective disorder (SAD)—characterized by symptoms of depression that typically correspond with periods of reduced daylight—may exacerbate the feelings of depression, anxiety, hopelessness, fatigue, and social withdrawal that they are already experiencing.

If you or a loved one is experiencing these feelings, it is important to seek help. Call the NY Project Hope helpline at 1-844-863-9314 to speak with a crisis counselor. It is available seven days a week from 8 AM – 10 PM, and is confidential, anonymous, and free. Or, visit by clicking below.

Epilepsy Foundation of Northeastern New York is bowling virtually!!
Research Shows Anxiety-Induced Seizures Can Resemble Epilepsy. Although epilepsy is one of the most common causes of seizures, it's not the only cause. Extreme emotional states can give rise to seizures. ... According to one study, as many as 20% of people diagnosed with epilepsy might have PNES instead. I’m conducting an experiment on myself to see if me without atorvastatin (Lipitor) causes me to have more seizures... I quite it two days ago and since then my seizures increased a lot... But I have to say since I have been on it and I begun exercising my seizures appeared to decrease in numbers... I use to have 4 or 5 everyday and many were while I worked physical labor... With Lipitor my heart and blood pressure have decreased to a healthier level and my seizures lessened to some days not having a seizure... So there are possibilities to ask your Neuroligist to test on yourself or your child... Not I am still on an epileptic med as well so it may be that the meds work better together for a patient with epilepsy... I’ve had the disease for more then 30 years now and it hasn’t been this much progress for me until this year... So good luck in learning more with your neurologist or your family members neurologist... Also note I bought a dog for treatment to depression and that may have some healthier results also... Attachment to someone you care about releases different chemicals in your body that may for certain reduce stress and anxiety as well and stress and anxiety may increase seizures to witch can cause complications to your physical body as well...
