Are you a parent that enjoys hunting?
If so, read below!

It may be wise to consider the environment in which your kid(s) grow up in with your significant other. More specifically, are you displaying love and joy to your significant other? Or, are you arguing with hate? Inter parental conflict can lead to your kid(s) internalizing disorders such as (anxiety, depression, worry) as well as immune system suppression. Your behavior towards your significant other can literally alter the health of your offspring. Their cells are always listening which means they will thrive or start to become impaired.

This internalization can start as early as pre-school age. They are always watching and absorbing the energy they are around. Provide a good environment with your significant other in the form of kindness, optimism, humility, and love in front of your kid(s) to optimize their mental, physical, and spiritual health. This in turn will allow not only you to improve your hunting healthspan, but also your kid(s) if they chose to be involved in this meaningful lifestyle!

Ever have a long night of processing and packing out an elk?

Here are a few tips to set yourself up for alleviating some of the detrimental impairments (reduced cognitive abilities) that arise from lack of sleep during and after that long night.

1)Drink water with a pinch of salt (electrolytes) before, during, and after.

2)Do not consume food late at night if you can as you need to keep the blood flow directed to your brain and muscles for making smart decisions and actions, not your stomach for processing food. Your body most likely has extra fuel reserves for these kind of situations:)

3)Wake up the same time you normally would from your long night to recalibrate your circadian Rhythm (sleep/wake cycle). Example: We packed this elk out from 10pm-6:10am. I typically go to bed at 9pm and wake up at 5:30am. So when we got back home, I didn’t sleep until taking a 45 min nap between 12-12:45pm. Then I waited until my normal time bed time (9pm) to go to sleep and woke up at 5:30am the next to rebalance my deep sleep cycle. This strategy worked out great for me on our last pack out which was incredibly enjoyable!

Attention Hunters!
Don’t take the easy route when you get tired and rely on an energy drink!
Why?

Drinking an energy drink such as (Bang, Monster, Red Bull, Rockstar etc..) may help you in that tired moment however, (1) it is not favorable healthspan wise (as seen below with cardiovascular dysfunction) and (2) it doesn’t address the CAUSE of why you are tired to begin with!! It merely addresses the SYMPTOM of you feeling tired in that moment. That usually leads to you buying more energy drinks which facilitates your cells to not function well on a consistent basis.

What could be the cause of you feeling tired and needing “energy”? Could be the previous and current day meals you were consuming (not nutrient dense), long pack out (worse time to consume an energy drink as your immune system is already impaired), lack of physical activity, too much screen time on a phone/computer/tv, eating all your meals over a period greater than 9 hours (time restricted eating), prior nights sleep was not in a good range of hours (7-9) etc. Looking for the CAUSE is the name of the game!

Things that do not make you an ugly hunter:

-Physical abnormalities
-Varicose Veins
-Amputations
-Scars
-Birthmarks
-Being over/under weight
-Eczema
-Rashes
-Stretch marks
-Hair loss
-Acne

Things that do make you an ugly hunter:

-Being unkind
-Bullying
-Complaining (about things in life you have control over but are not willing to put in the effort to change)
-Constantly interrupting in a conversation
-Claiming to be an expert and never be wrong (undefeated in arguments)

Just a friendly reminder for all you hunters out there!

You may be a hunter, but that doesn’t mean you are better than a non-hunter. Control that ego and show humility. It’s one of the best ways to portray to society what this meaningful and worthwhile lifestyle is all about as well as set an example for the next generation (as I am with my niece!).

If you have symptoms such as:
Depression
Anxiety

Look at what the cause could be:

Causes (the root) of mental illness:
Lack of deep sleep
Lack of sunlight
Lack of exercise
Lack of omega 3’s
Lack of goals
Poor nutrition
Monotonous job
Being Ungrateful

Off season exercising with an empty stomach for bear hunting?

Recent literature has shown that exercising before eating breakfast burns more fat, improves how the body responds to insulin and lowers people's risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Sounds like a recipe for vitality!

Exercising before eating may positively influence your hunting healthspan!!

Additional Information:
There are many ways to analyze the previously mentioned literature provided from a hunting healthspan viewpoint. One of them being, from a muscle physiology standpoint. When you consume food, blood is directed to your gut to assist with digestion process. When this occurs, your muscles are not supplied adequate blood for recruiting muscle fibers and utilizing all three energy systems (phosphagen, glycolytic, and oxidative) which dictate how you utilize your bodies fuels in given time periods with physical/mental demands (activities).
Simply meaning..... exercising before eating will get you more fit (increased muscle fiber recruitment and efficient energy system activation) which will allow you to pursue bears in the high country more effectively.

Are you a hunter that gets knee aches from walking downhill?

Depending on the location you are hunting, you may encounter steep terrain. Terrain that requires effort to get up the mountain but also to get down. For many, coming down a steep mountain brings more discomfort to the knees than uphill. The trick is to look at why this may be.

From a bio mechanical standpoint, when you are walking down hill, your quadriceps (rectus femoris, vastus medialis, vastus lateralis, and vastus intermedius) begin to tighten around the knee. When this occurs, you may fee dull and achy pain in the knees. Keep in mind that most of our daily activities utilize our quadriceps (quad dominant society).

Good news from the muscle physiology world is there are strategies to alleviate some of this knee discomfort from downhill travel. Think of muscles that are the antagonists (opposite joint torque) to the quadriceps. Those muscles would be: each strand of the hamstring (biceps femoris, semimembranosus and semitendinosus) as well as each layer of the glutes (gluteus maximus, gluteus medius, and gluteus minimus).

Incorporating movements that involve recruiting/strengthening the hamstrings as well as the glutes will begin to rotate your pelvis into a more “neutral” position that is balanced for long term knee health. This in turn de-loads your knee. When you neglect your hamstrings and glutes, your quadriceps become more and more dominant which leads to achy knees as well as low back tightness (pulls your pelvis into a “over extended position” with the help of midline muscles).

Incorporate movements that recruit and strengthen your hamstrings and glutes. Simple examples could be:

Kettlebell Swings
Frisbee/Boso Ball Curls
Backwards/Lateral Monster Band Walk
Glute Bridge Holds
Hip Blasters

The trick is to not just incorporate these movements a week before you leave, more like all year long. Need help with any of the movements?

Recent literature has shown that resistance exercise training was associated with a 45% reduction in multiple depressive symptoms according to a meta-analysis of 33 randomized controlled trials.

Reduce symptoms affiliated with depression? All aboard the resistance train!!

What can elk hunters use for resistance training especially if you don’t have much time and/or don’t have a gym membership?

-Logs
-Dogs
-Spouses
-Basically anything......

If you enjoy deer hunting, consider brewing up some dark roast coffee!

Recent literature has suggested that consumption of dark roast coffee brew (500 ml/day) (nothing added) for 1 month caused a 23% reduction in DNA damage.

DNA damage is known to accelerate the aging process and can lead to cancer.

If you are a deer hunter that enjoys the pursuit of deer maybe consider incorporating dark roast coffee (nothing added) in your lifestyle. I would highly recommend @blackriflecoffee as they support veterans which is incredibly meaningful.

Recommendations on when to drink it:
-Between 5am-10am

Why that time frame?
-Caffeine from coffee has about a half life of 12 hours so some of that caffeine is still circulating in your body later on which may cause imbalances in your sleep.

To the parents of the next generation of hunters:

Children whose mothers consumed fish during pregnancy had IQs that were between 4.8 -9.5 points higher than children whose mothers did not eat fish. Higher fish consumption was linked to a stronger effect on IQ (intelligent quotient).

Why is this information important for future parents of hunters??

Having a higher IQ may be affiliated with having efficient reasoning and problem solving skills which is incredibly important in life as is assists you in what is good for your health and what is bad for your health. Meaning, greater chances of your offspring making better lifestyle choices. Meaning, longer life full of hunting. Therefore healthier and happier!

Seafood in general is home to a plethora of nutrients that are biologically essential for optimal fetal and child neurodevelopment including zinc, vitamin B12, iron, and vitamin d, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Misconception:
All seafood is completely full of mercury.

New Perspective:
The larger the fish, the greater the chances of mercury doses. You have to look at this topic from a difference lens. If you are nervous about your salmon having mercury, you better stay away from store bought beef, chicken, and pork as most of it is not fed what you think. You would be surprised if you saw what most animals (store bought) are fed if you saw in person. Maybe there is a trade off here?

Recommendations of seafood with little to no mercury:

-Shrimp
-Trout
-Salmon
-Salmon Roe

If you don’t currently live near the coast and have access to fresh seafood, look for seafood at the store that says “wild caught” with nothing added. You will find there is more seafood in stores that are farm raised with “things” added for color or taste. Get as close to the real source as possible.

To all you elk hunters who want to have a better memory and learn more effortlessly. Maybe consider consuming leafy vegetables on a daily basis!

Recent literature has shown that people who ate 1 serving of green, leafy vegetables performed better on learning/memory tests and showed an equivalent of being 11 years younger cognitively than people who rarely ate them. An immense amount of hunting is affiliated with your ability to remember mistakes and and learn new techniques.

Being cognitively younger reflects your biological age (age of your tissues and cells). As an example: your chronological age (your number year after year that you celebrate) may be 52 but since you decided you wanted to have efficient cognitive abilities by consuming leafy vegetables, your biological age is 41. This also in turn means your hunting healthspan will be improved. Which means more hunting without health limitations. Which means more happiness.

Some of my favorite nutrient dense leafy vegetables:

Kale
Bok Choy
Swiss Chard
Collard Greens
