Is Chicken Really The First Ingredient?

So, to be clear: chicken as the first ingredient may actually be chicken meat powder, with added water. How much water, no one knows for sure. And does powder + water = chicken? When we need to rehydrate a living creature (human or pet) we use intravenous saline or other electrolyte containing solutions. And if there is a lack of red blood cells or plasma, we add those too. So, again, does chicken meat powder + water = chicken? Real chicken?

Avoid the confusion. Feed fresh food, not unknown nuggets of powder, water, and mystery meals, with synthetic vitamins and mineral mixes.

Regulatory loopholes allow manufacturers the opportunity to deceive pet owners.

Kibble is… – The Healthy Dog Workshop

Food, or feed? https://healthydogworkshop.com/kibble-is

Kibble. When it comes right down to it, kibble is kibble. Nothing more, nothing less. And now that debate is raging everywhere about whether certain kibble causes cardiac disease in dogs, and whether to feed kibble with grains, without grains, and from which manufacturers, I feel compelled to explai...

05/12/2021

Do not worry about the salt in sardines, oysters, and other foods. Sodium is a required nutrient.

There is no reason to have a salt phobia 😟when feeding your healthy dog.

Animals (and birds) show a specific appetite for sodium. Sodium deficiency causes reduced appetite, weight loss and/or impaired bone growth and even death in the case of very severe restriction.

✅Sodium (and chloride) are involved in maintaining osmotic pressure (the water balance between the cells of the body and their surrounding fluids).
✅Sodium is also involved in the regulation of an appropriate acid-base balance of body tissues.

❗️Ensure your dog always has fresh water available and your healthy dog will have no issues with sodium.

Yes, soon you will be able to feed your dog a product (it is not food!) made from maggots. Wonder who will do the AAFCO feeding trials on this one?

MAGGOTS. The Trend of the Future.

Gunny here
Yes I’m a dog. As a dog I have to admit I have eaten some nasty, smelly crap. I really like to roll in it. It’s like human men with their beards – save that flavor for later!

Now that everybody’s been staying home for the last year, my mom has been home listening to conferences. I have nothing else to do so I listen also.

She was on a conference recently (since I can’t spell, I never quite got the name. Something to do with America and feed and officials.) and apparently the world is going to be a better place because we dogs are now allowed to eat maggots.
You heard me right. Maggots.

“They” are marketing this as sustainability. Like there are too many dogs and there’s not enough food to feed us so they’re going to feed us trash.

Don’t get me wrong – like the next dog, I’m concerned about the health of the planet and don’t want to cause any harm. But I’m sure my health is not aided if I eat trash.

Efforts to feed trash and waste products to us dogs have been couched in fancy words before. First, it was “vegetarian” diets. Now it’s “sustainable” ingredients.

I wouldn’t be so upset if the quality were there. But ultimately, this is trash. Maggots now.

Even if it weren’t garage, we dogs are not meant to skip meat in our diets. Humans make better vegetarians than dogs. If our humans want to save the planet and reduce their carbon footprint, I’m all about it, but I think we should leave the vegetarian diets for humans and the bugs for birds and bats.

Think about it: what do you think the maggots are eating? What do maggots eat? Yes, putrid flesh (garbage). Since we are what we eat, if the maggots are eating trash, then the maggots are essentially made of trash. Is there some magical property that happens in the internal organs of a major that garbage is magically transformed into nutritive substance? Somehow, I’m supposed to get my nutrition from the bugs that ate the trash? Ew!

Maggots and maggot oil – no thank you!

Oh. Sorry. They aren’t calling it maggots. Black soldier fly larva. Whatever. I am into calling a spade a spade. Maggots

One Pet Owner’s Rude Awakening

When people ask me why I am so opposed to kibble, my first reason is always that ingredients are not human quality. I have actually had veterinarians reply, "So what?" Well, here is what! This is how dead animals are rendered into meat meal. This is what "not human quality" looks like. Does this look like it could be the base of a nutritious food?

Warning: the images of pet food ingredient raw materials in this post are graphic.

Want to follow your protocols as much as possible. There is no "wholistic" vet even near us. We have a 3 year-old std. poo and are about to get an 8 wk. old one. I'm afraid he'll already have been vaccinated when we pick him up. Also, I'm trying to figure out where to find good bones and get our 3 year old off so much kibble without his system rebelling. Am going to be reading lots of your input going forward.
My 10 yo boxer had 3 seizures last Saturday. I had just put a new Seresto flea collar on about a week prior. She previously had one on all last year with no seizures. I took it off the next day after looking online about seizures. It's been a week and we're seizure free. I had also just put collars on my cat and other dog the same day. Neither of them had any issues, but out of an abundance of caution; I have removed them too.
Dr. Coger, not sure if you read this article today or not, but there are huge red flags regarding the use of the Seresto collar. I have been using one on my Daisy for over two years with no side effects so far (thank GOD). She was diagnosed with IMHA and all three of them recommended the Seresto collar for fleas and ticks. I live in the south and she has to have flea and tick protection. Now that the Seresto collar is off the table to use, what do I do now and what can I use to protect her?
Hello! What do you recommend for small breeds who are aggressive chewers? My 11 month old Boston loves to chew but seems to get bored of marrow bones, etc once they lose their initial flavor.
During one of your conversations about dog bowls you did mention glass as well as stainless steel. Do you have a good recommended company that sells the glass dog bowls that are safe? Thanks!
I'm working with a holistic vet who only vaccinates for Parvo. She's willing to order the other core vaccines Distemper and Adenovirus for me. What specific vaccines should I ask her to order?
Hi Dr. Coger. I just read your article on The Healthy Dog Workshop about Buying a Veterinarian - and it was absolutely brilliant. You laid out bare in an articulate fashion the issues that I have been aware of for the past 5 years or so, and it was incredibly relieving to hear it from a vet. Thank you - I think you have guts, and I appreciate that you are sharing your story.
Hi Dr Laurie, I paid for a consult but couldn't tell if my email went through. I hope we can still talk next week. Thanks!
Is there a way I can search your page? I'm trying to find information that can help me understand how to evaluate and reduce my dog's allergies or autoimmune issues...
I bought a flea collar for my puggles...they have been wearing them for at least 2 months now...they are only 6yo, males and very healthy weight etc...the seizure came outta nowhere...took him to the vet...hes stable and one of the 1st things I did was remove that dang collar! (seresto) and while waiting at the vet id remembered I needed to take the other one off his brother...so I flew home took it off and bathed him. I hope there's a class action suit because i'm traumatized...as is my little guy.
Hi Dr. Laurie, it gets a tad confusing when holistic vets say different things. Dr Becker says dogs need B vitamins regardless of the diet they are eating. Can I ask what you think about that?
Hi, I am reading your article about seresto and seizures. I had a seresto collar on my dog for about 3.5 months or so. He recently had a seizure, I immediately took the collar off and tossed it. It was has been 11 days and he had another seizure. Im not a Dr so I can't speak for severity but they were absolutely terrifying. I didn't even finish reading your post yet, I intend to go back to it, but do you have any suggestions on what I can try to do to make my dog feel better? My next step was to research CBD products. I just want him to feel better and I feel like too many vets don't take seizures very seriously.
