Rhonda Green serves as the program manager for Horizons’ Community Cancer Screening Program (CCSP). She has dedicated 11 years to the organization and played an instrumental role in building the CCSP from an idea to a nationally-recognized model of care that has dramatically increased cancer screening services throughout rural South Georgia.

Rhonda is passionate about her work. She goes above and beyond to educate patients about colorectal cancer and encourage preventive screening. In fact, you may have seen Rhonda dressed as her alter ego, Captain Colon, a super hero that soars around South Georgia each year during #colorectalcancerawarenessmonth to educate everyone about the importance of preventive screening. This fun and creative platform perfectly captures Rhonda’s personality and passion to educate others about colorectal cancer screening.

In Rhonda’s spare time she loves to cook and spend time with family and friends. She also has a heart for animals and is a pet parent to several cats and a dog, many which are rescue animals.

When asked the most rewarding part of her work, Rhonda shared, “ The most rewarding part of my work is knowing that what I do really makes a difference in the lives of those we serve. As a navigator, I tell my patients thank you at least twice when speaking to them. It is important to express my appreciation to them for trusting me and the CCSP to assist them with their preventive screening needs. These screenings not only benefit the patient, but their families as well.”

Thank you Rhonda for your tireless service!

Colorectal Cancer Personal Screening Stories | CDC

Joyce from Washington, DC says: "In 1992, my husband
and sister were diagnosed with colon cancer. They died
within four months of each other...I get a colonoscopy
regularly. I'm 71 and have had at least four of them. The
first two times, I had polyps which were painlessly
removed during the procedure. Do I enjoy the prep? No
way. But I see it as a small price to pay for enjoying the
rest of my life. The procedure itself has always been
painless, and afterwards I have gone out with friends to a
film or a walk, or gone back to work. I am passionate
about people getting a colonoscopy. I check with my
friends regularly to see if they are up-to-date on their
exams. I don't want to lose anyone else needlessly." Read

Several people who had screening tests for colorectal cancer describe why they did it and what the experience was like for them. To share your personal screening experience, call CDC at 1-800-CDC-INFO (TTY: 888-232-6348) or contact CDC-INFO.

Meet Navigator Aisha Viquez! Aisha has been an integral member of the Horizons family for 9 years! Aisha loves watching movies and reading books. In fact, Aisha often recites random quotes; one such favorite is Disney's The Little Mermaid!

When asked what is most rewarding about her work as a Navigator, Aisha shared, "I love helping people. As a navigator I'm privileged to bridge the gap between the patient, providers, and needed health services. The reward comes in developing relationships, helping our patients overcome various barriers and knowing that I've made a lasting difference in their lives."

For those on the fence about screening Aisha said, "Someone once said, peace of mind is a powerful thing. There is power in knowledge. Don't allow your fear to keep you from getting screened and potentially saving your life. "

Thank you Aisha for your hard work and dedication!
