Catholic Charities Caregiver Support Services

Catholic Charities Caregiver Support Services Caregivers Support Services is an agency of Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Albany with one simple mission - to make life better for those who care for friends and relatives in need.

2012 is the agency’s 25th anniversary year. The agency is every bit as much, if not more, dedicated to its single mission of supporting caregivers than ever before. The recent economic climate has been difficult for the families we serve and for most of the State. As a result, services and dollars have been stretched thin. This agency has taken this situation seriously and responded by offering in

Meeting the Emotional Challenges of Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation, Part Two

Part II of a posting that I shared on Saturday 2/23 about a friend of mine recently had to enter some short term rehabilitation. He is a mental health specialist who is sharing in this piece what the rehab did to facilictate emotional stability and what the social environment did to keep spirits positive. This was lifed from his blog through the huffingtonpost.

The physicians and other health professionals included me in the process of making medical and other plans. I felt I was not just a patient taking orders from a health care provider on high but a respected part of the health care team.

In Blended Families, Responsibility Blurs

Am interesting piece on caregivers in a blended family.

That sense of reciprocity we often hear from caregivers — ‘she took care of me when I was young, so I need to help out now that she’s old’ — doesn’t seem to apply in late-life stepfamilies.

Emotional Challenges of Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation

a friend of mine recently had to enter some short term rehabilitation and shared his experience as a care receiver in his blog through the huffingtonpost. It seemed worth sharing here. This piece is about the emotional challenges he experienced while in rehab.

As a social worker, social advocate, and teacher, making a contribution to the well-being of others has been my full-time job and given meaning to my life. Having to focus primarily on my own recovery felt like a loss of meaning.

A recent study by researchers from the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology finds that elder abuse in low-income Latino communities goes largely unreported. More than 40 percent of Latino elders in the study told Spanish-speaking interviewers that they had been abused or neglected in the past year—yet only 1.5 percent of the victims said they had ever reported the abuse to authorities.

Kathleen H. Wilber, Zachary D. Gassoumi, and Diana C. Homeier, all of USC, were co-authors on the study, which was published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society.

'Sleep and Aging with a Disability'
New Pub Is Must-Read for Older Adults, Providers

Sleep difficulties occur more frequently and are more pronounced among older adults—and especially those with disabilities—than among the general population, says a concise and readable new publication that offers practical help. From the Aging and Physical Disability Research and Training Center at the University of Washington comes "Sleep and Aging with a Disability." The five-pager is billed as a fact sheet, but it's more than that—it's an invaluable resource for all older adults, their families, and service providers interested in addressing and preventing a common and debilitating problem.

Looking for ways to start a conversation with your loved one about a touchy subject? Try introducing the topic by talking about an article, television show or a friend that is having a similar problem. Your loved one may realize that they are not the only person whose life is changing.

02/18/2013

Most of us dread "the talk" with our loved one about the future. Here are some tips on how to start.
*Talk with other family members first - so everyone can share concerns and agree on the need for the conversation.
*Decide who should be there.
*Be prepared -- do your homework.
You may be surprised that the care receiver is relieved to start the converstation.
*Listen -- it is a converstaion not a lecture.
*Be supportive and sympathetic.

Early detection of Alzheimer's is important for your employees as both individuals at risk and as caregivers for family members. Most people do not know when forgetting becomes a serious health problem. By putting off learning more, people impacted by Alzheimer's disease are being diagnosed too late and miss the opportunity to get the best help possible.

President Obama Puts Spotlight on Alzheimer's Disease in State of the Union Address: President Obama propelled Alzheimer's disease into the limelight when he cited the brain disorder as an example of research efforts necessary to accelerate the nation's economic growth. "Today, our scientists are mapping the human brain to unlock the answers to Alzheimer's... ," he said. "Now is not the time to gut these job-creating investments in science and innovation. Now is the time to reach a level of research and development not seen since the height of the Space Race."

February is American Heart Month. Studies show that the very same risk factors for heart disease - including lack of exercise, smoking, diabetes and obesity - also put people at greater risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. It's important to know your risk factors.

A new government-funded study suggests that the number of people with Alzheimer's disease will reach 13.8 million by 2050, a figure nearly triple the estimated 5.1 million people currently diagnosed with the brain disorder.

Temporary and short-term respite alone does not provide the help most caregivers need. Caregivers need to give careful thought to how they want to spend their respite time. Respite needs to be meaningful and purposeful for caregivers to fulfill their needs and plans.
