Nothing is more important to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society than the safety and well-being of blood cancer patients, their families, and the community we serve. With this in mind, we are shifting our Albany and Vermont Light The Night events to a virtual experience. Vermont on September 24, and Albany on October 21.

Though our event format is changing nothing can stop our passion to bring light to the darkness of cancer with your commitment and support to help end blood cancers.

This #NationalImmunizationAwarenessMonth, we're highlighting the importance of vaccination, especially against COVID-19. 💉 LLS recently examined antibody response to the COVID-19 vaccine in 1400 blood cancer patients, the largest study of its kind. Results show that vaccination offers protection to most blood cancer patients and should be combined with prevention precautions for best protection. Learn more 👉 https://bit.ly/3s5Vgf0 #NIAM

On #NationalSistersDay, meet two incredible sisters and survivors Dianne & Julie! ❤️❤️ BOTH Dianne & Julie were diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and together are celebrating a combined 24 years of survival.

Dianne even fought through two relapses before her cancer went into remission. “One of the treatments that helped save my life all THREE times is a monoclonal antibody called Rituxan, which was discovered by an LLS-funded researcher,” says Dianne. “Rituxan has saved untold thousands of lives—including my sister Julie's.”

Inspired by the work LLS does to fund life-saving research, Dianne started fundraising with our Man & Woman of the Year campaign. This year, she raised $150,047 and was named National “All Star” Woman of the Year! Julie fundraised over $10k for her sister's campaign! 🙌

Who holds you down and has your back? Shout out your sister today! 👇

07/23/2021

"I was almost five years old when I first got diagnosed with cancer. One day my dad saw a bump on the back of my head, and our pediatrician told us that it was a lymph node. My doctor told my parents that it's normal, part of recovery from a fever or cough and to monitor it. Soon after that incident, it got worse. I got a bigger lymph node under my chin and made an appointment to get it checked.

It was June 1, 2013, when my parents got the bad news that I was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). I spent the first seven days getting many tests done, multiple rounds of blood work, my first broviac line surgery, and an extremely painful bone marrow aspiration. During my stay, I had a service dog named Sadie visit me who helped me feel better on the bad days.

When I was discharged to go home, I knew I would continue the chemotherapy treatment and have uncountable visits to the hospital for another nine months to complete my trial and treatment. My school life was very ordinary; no one knew about my cancer because I was a very introverted kid. Some days I would go straight to the clinic right after school and do my homework there. It was a routine for a couple of years.

While I was going through the most difficult phase of my life, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) helped me overcome some of those difficult memories. I remember in 2016 going to San Francisco with my mom, talking to people about my cancer, raising donations for the LLS Light The Night walks with my family, and raising awareness about pediatric cancer. My best memories are walking inside the AT&T Ball Park numerous times, marching with my banner, “#TeamA***n,” with my grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, my cousin, and my baby sister.

I am now in remission! It’s great to lead a normal life, having fun and going out with my friends. I have been in remission for the last five years, and I am thankful for the opportunities and resources LLS has given me and my family. I beat cancer!"

Thank you for sharing your story to our community, A***n! Please join us in wishing A***n continued good health & read his moving story 👉 https://bit.ly/3zqckP7

THE RESULTS ARE IN! 🩸 Thanks to our community, LLS has conducted the LARGEST study of blood cancer patients and antibody response to the COVID-19 vaccine. While some patients studied did not mount a full antibody response, vaccines are safe and offer protection to the majority of blood cancer patients. Learn more 👉 https://bit.ly/2V8TDRq

By “acting unvaccinated” we mean that blood cancer patients who have been fully vaccinated against COVID-19 should continue to take preventive measures such as wearing masks, social distancing, hand washing and avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated indoor spaces. This is especially important since some blood cancer patients may not get optimal protection from the vaccines and may be more susceptible to infection after vaccination.

Holly has been a dedicated volunteer with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society since 2010 when she was introduced to the Team in Training campaign.  Upon completing her first of five endurance events with TNT, her family like too many others, was directly impacted by a blood cancer. With a strong desire to become more involved in the mission she joined the Board of Trustees in 2014 serving in that role for six years. Holly has worked to raise life-saving research funds and awareness on behalf of patients, survivors, and their families by serving in several roles within The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.  She has led a Light the Night team in honor of her mother, co-chaired the Man & Woman of the Year campaign for two consecutive years and is currently serving her second consecutive year as the Students of the Year Co-Chair.
Holly is the Artistic Lead & Owner of Nuance, A Boutique Salon which opened under her direction in 2007 and serves as Executive Director of The Salon and Spa Professionals of NYS.

Chuck lost his mother to a rare form of leukemia when he was 27. He cherishes every opportunity to help people with blood cancers. Last year, when the MOY Campaign’s usual fundraising wasn't possible due to COVID-19, he launched a social media campaign that engaged a network of friends, family, and coworkers and raised $25,000, earning LLS's Man of the Year award. During the LLS MOY campaign, he ran a 5k every week to raise awareness of this cause as well as others and this continues to this day.  Chuck nominated his daughter for LLS Student of the Year, which helped to raise even more money for the cause and honored her grandmother's memory.  Additionally, he recently served on the Leadership Committee for LLS Man and Women of the Year.   Coaching youth bowlers at a local bowling alley and participating in an annual three-day Run for the Fallen from Syracuse to Albany to honor service members who’ve lost their lives since the war on terrorism began.  Chuck has attempted to donate blood every eight weeks for more than 30 years as well.
