“This patient-centric study shows that we can move away from chemotherapy treatment for patients who won’t respond or can’t withstand the harsh effects of the same chemotherapies we’ve been using for 40 years and match them with a treatment better suited for their individual case.”

A study published today in Nature Medicine shows superior outcomes for patients in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s paradigm-shifting Beat AML Clinical Trial. Learn more >> https://bit.ly/37JQnzR

“Every day that I survive is a blessing and a victory. If you ever feel that you’ve come to the end of your rope, remember to tie a knot and hang on!”

Throughout her experience with multiple myeloma, Cynthia has tried to handle her journey with grace.

Cynthia was on a family vacation in 2015 when she began experiencing back pain so severe that she was confined to a wheelchair. When she returned home, Cynthia went to see her doctor who referred her to an oncologist. After several tests, Cynthia was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.

In August 2016, Cynthia underwent an autologous bone marrow transplant that used her own stem cells. The next day, she participated in an immunotherapy clinical trial. It was an extremely difficult time for Cynthia and she says the experience gave a new meaning to the word sick.

Now in remission, Cynthia is thankful to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) for funding one of the treatments that helped save her life and for providing a valuable support system. She is a volunteer through LLS Myeloma Link, as well as a participant in LLS Light The Night to raise funds to bring light to the darkness of blood cancer.

During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, stories like Sasha's bring hope to families fighting blood cancer. Through The LLS Children’s Initiative, LLS is committed to helping children like Sasha not only survive their cancer but thrive in their lives after treatment.

Sasha was just 2 years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in October 2017. She began intense treatment right away, which continued until right before her fifth birthday. Sasha spent countless days at the hospital fighting for her life and enduring the brutal side effects that came with treatment, but she never lost her charming personality and bright smile.

Today, Sasha continues to go to the hospital for monthly blood count checks, which has become even more challenging during the pandemic as she is immunocompromised.

Together, the family volunteers with The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Most recently, Sasha was an Honored Hero for her local LLS Light The Night walk. “LLS has provided our family with community support and we were able to connect with other survivors and caregivers by sharing our story,” says Randi. “I’m forever grateful for the support we’ve received and for LLS who is at the forefront of fighting blood cancer, so one day, no other child has to go through this.”

Meet Upstate New York Light The Night Honored Hero Samuel

Samuel was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) May 2018, just a few days after his first birthday. As a family, we knew that his diagnosis of Down syndrome put him at a higher risk of being diagnosed with leukemia, so he was tested for leukemia at his one year checkup. The tests came back positive for early stage leukemia, and we were sent right from his doctor’s office to Albany Medical Center for further testing. The next day we were told Samuel had AML and we started treatment almost immediately.

Samuel’s treatment was very aggressive and he was in the hospital from May to November 2018, except for a few occasions when his blood count was up enough that we could take him out of the hospital. Throughout his ordeal, Samuel never lost his happiness or bubbly attitude throughout the course of treatment and loved when the doctors and nurses would come in and clap or play peek-a-boo. Samuel will celebrate being two years cancer free on November 21, 2020.
