When everything is making you angry and you’re triggered by everything, your Protector is fully driving.

There are days, weeks, sometimes even months when I feel really bitter. Everything looks like frustration, and I have this tendency to want to start a fight.

So I told myself: instead of starting a fight, what if I gave my loved ones an away message? 📵

💬 “Not fit for human interaction today. Call me tomorrow.”
🌧️ “Under emotional rainstorm. I’ll call you when the clouds lift.”
🐾 “My feral side is emerging right now. I’ll call you when I’m domesticated again.” (my personal favorite)

It gives you some breathing room so you’re not so reactive, and it helps protect your relationships with the people you love.

So tell me in the comments: what emotional weather are you in right now? 🌤️

My science degree took the storytelling right out of me.

Two degrees in nutrition and science trained me to get the facts, know the facts, and tell the facts only. Then I started counseling clients, and the facts alone weren’t landing. I might be accurate, but I wasn’t very interesting… or very cuddly. 😅

So I’ve had to retrain myself: tell the story. Invite someone on the journey with you, so what you say has emotional weight.

If something in your life isn’t sticking, like people not remembering what you tell them or not acting on it, try giving them a story instead of another fact.

Who in your life might finally hear you if you told them a story?

Comment below and tell me what sticks with you: facts or stories?

I have mama brain. Which really just means every single thought I have, every day, is constantly interrupted.

My sleep is interrupted. My eating is interrupted. Every thought, every text — interrupted by a little voice going “mama, mama, mama.” That’s mama brain.

So here’s a little something for the friends and family of mamas: if you text me and don’t hear back, text me again in a couple days. I promise I saw it — I probably read it halfway, even started writing back, and then a tiny hand reached out going “mama, mama, mama,” and the reply never got sent.

So follow up. “Hey mama, didn’t hear back — just checking in.” What a blessing that is. I love when my friends follow up.

Comment below and tell me: what’s your mama brain like?

Toddlers are the worst to put to bed. 😅

The other night my nephew was over with my mom, and she’s trying to get him down while he’s screaming in a full fit. I’m in the next room with my own son, just lying there wondering: what would it actually take to get this kid to sleep?

And then it clicked — we have to make it motivational. Incentivize it high enough that he’ll at least stay in his room and give us an hour of peace. So I came out and said, “Hey — if you can spend 15 minutes alone in your room trying to fall asleep, you get cartoons and chocolate.”

He took it to heart. “Yeah! I can totally do that.” Off he went, shut the door — and waited the whole 15 minutes. No crying. Nothing.

It was a good reminder: sometimes we need a big enough reward — something to anticipate — to get us to do something really hard.

So tell me in the comments: what do you need to motivate you today?

As a mom, there’s almost nothing that makes me angrier than anticipating my baby will nap for a certain stretch — and then he doesn’t go down, or he wakes up early. Suddenly I’ve “lost” that time, and the future I’d pictured is derailed. (He’s cute, so I hold that little face and say, “it’s alright, it’s alright, I can handle this.”)

Same thing in my business — I anticipate working with someone, they cancel, and I feel my chest tighten. And just this past Saturday: an exercise class and a lunch with a friend, both cancelled within five minutes. I sat there in a puddle of seething rage.

But it gave me some awareness: how do we anticipate the future and handle disappointment without becoming a dragon? I think it’s staying in relationship with yourself in the disappointment — letting yourself name it, feel it, and move through it — so you don’t hurl it at someone else.

I’m curious what you think. How do you handle anticipation and disappointment? Tell me in the comments.

My nervous system hit rock bottom after I had a baby.

About three months in, I was trying to soothe a screaming newborn on no sleep — and the sound of my husband and our dog peacefully snoring felt like nails dragging down my spine. I wanted to attack. I wanted to leave. I lay there actually planning how I’d ask for a divorce.

Now, about 16 months later, my baby sleeps through the night more often than not, and I feel like I’m finally recovering. Somewhat human again. And from here I can see it clearly: that fight I was having wasn’t really about my husband. It was my nervous system trying to cope. Trying to survive.

So I want to ask you — where in your life are you really fighting? Maybe just check in: Am I sleeping? Is my nervous system being cared for? Is it really about them… or about what’s happening inside me?

If any of this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Leave a comment below — I’d love to hear your story.

For years, the second someone opened up to me, I’d grab my detective hat and magnifying glass — “ah, I know exactly why you feel that way, and I know your fix.”

Here’s the honest part: I don’t. Not really — not before I’ve actually listened.

So I’ve been retraining myself. Ask a question. Be present. Say “tell me more” — and then get quiet enough to hear what’s actually under there. And the more I practice it, the more I’m awed by what surfaces when I stop trying to solve someone and simply stay with them.

A small experiment for today: notice where you tried to figure it out — and where you could ask a question instead.

This is the heart of what we practice together in the Regulate & Relate Workshop. If it speaks to you, come sit with us:

I've been thinking about shame — and how often we use it to move people, especially around health.
We shame people into “should,” thinking it'll push them to change. But shame usually does the opposite: it makes us hide. We hide the truth — from ourselves, and from each other.
Yes, shame can be motivating. It can make someone take action. But is that true growth? I don't think so. When we genuinely embrace something, our identity grows with it and we come away empowered. Shame doesn't offer that.
So here's the pause worth taking: am I trying to move this person through growth and invitation — or through shame? (And it's worth asking that of ourselves, too.)
If a growth-and-invitation approach is what you want more of, the Regulate & Relate Workshop is here: https://www.alanm.org/regulate-and-relate-workshop

I keep coming back to safety — and how much of our truth can only emerge when we feel safe.
There's an internal safety and an external safety in every relationship. And really, safety comes down to one promise: whatever emerges, I will still listen, and I'll still be here with you.
That can be true for yourself, too. Can you sit with yourself and say: whatever my truths are — however contradictory, however ugly they might feel — I can still receive them and stay in relationship with myself? And then offer that same safety to someone else.
So I wonder: where in your day could you create a little more safety — inside yourself, and with the people you love?
If you'd like to build that kind of safety more intentionally, the Regulate & Relate Workshop is here: https://www.alanm.org/regulate-and-relate-workshop

While making these videos, a quiet voice keeps popping up. It asks: what if it doesn't sell? What if I can't create? What if it doesn't grow into what I hope it becomes?
And then my heart spoke up. It said: we have already been changed by the experience. We have gained so much just by going through this process ourselves. And maybe we underestimate how much we are created by what we create.
Maybe, in the end, that's what matters more.
So whatever you're working on — whatever you're creating — I hope you pause and notice how it's creating you.
