An en caul birth is traditionally thought to be good luck. I know one thing it’s exciting and beautiful. Such a neat intercession of womb and world. This is when baby is born within the sac and membrane. Birth can look so many ways and boy oh boy isn’t it beautiful.

Who needs a baby fix today? 💜👣💜

We've got wonderful news - Tumani and Okpara's infant has been born! ❤️

This critically endangered western lowland gorilla was born in the morning hours of September 4, 2020. Mother and infant are doing well! Animal care staff are closely monitoring the infant’s health to ensure that Tumani and baby are receiving the care needed.

The World of Primates will be closed while Tumani, infant, and the troop bond. We anticipate reopening World of Primates as soon as animal care staff feel that mother and infant have properly bonded. All gorillas will have access to their outdoor habitat, so you may catch a glimpse of the new addition during your Zoo visit once World of Primates has reopened. #SavingSpecies

This should NEVER happen. If there is ever a BIPOC or an LBGTQ+ person who wants a doula who is similar to them, I will help you to find that person. If they are alright with someone who is an ally, I will be there for them.

😡 This type of treatment has to stop! Here are some things that you can do to have a more empowered birth.

1. Hire a birth doula
2. Consider having a home birth
3. Search for a midwife
4. Ask questions
5. If you choose to birth with an OB-GYN, find a provider that respects you AND honors the type of birth you envision
6. Find a provider that supports a VBAC ( vaginal birth after a cesarean birth) - if applicable
7. Attend childbirth education classes
8. Know you rights
9. Remember hospital policies are not laws
10. Educate your family
11. Hire a postpartum doula
12. Allow yourself time to heal

Edit: We provide virtual & in-person birth and postpartum doula support.

The Leaky Boob

The inequities in pregnancy, birth, and lactation support for Black families is well documented. We know it is an issue. But what does that look like in real life? This graphic takes a look at the very real challenges.

White privilege does not mean that white people do not have struggles or that they don't experience these difficulties. It means that their struggles and their experiences with these difficulties are NOT because of the color of their skin. It means that statistically they are less likely (not that it is impossible) to experience these things. It means that they do not encounter these challenges based solely on their skin tone.

It means they aren't followed through a store because of their skin. They may be followed through a store but it would be for a different reason.

White people pointing out that they have experienced these things doesn't prove that white privilege doesn't exist.

*Racist comments will be deleted and the users that make them will be banned from this page. Supportive, kind, caring comments welcomed from everyone. Black people and WOC are welcome to make comments that reflect the reality of ongoing and past trauma, anger, fear, grief, etc. White people, do not center yourself in this conversation, do NOT comment "all lives matter" or some version of it, do not ask Black people to educate you or guide you as to what you should do, and do not argue anything about knowing the whole story. For white people who would like to understand how they have privilege even if they don’t think they have privilege, if you need some resources after you do some googling, let us know. Thank you.

Be-You. Do you. Do what is best for you and your baby.
05/18/2020

Be-You. Do you. Do what is best for you and your baby.

The first time I gave my baby a bottle of formula, I cried happy tears.
Big, overwhelming, uncontrollable...
Happy tears.

I couldn’t control the flow as the tears dripped down my face.
It was tears of pure love. Overwhelming love.

The decision to switch to formula was not an easy one to make. I felt the pressure over what I “should” do. I cried over it, worried over it, and did my research.

But then I prayed. And the answer was clear.

When I switched to formula, it was the first time I looked down at my baby while feeding and he was satisfied.

We did things we were never able to do while breastfeeding, because of my overwhelming letdown.

When I finally gave my baby a bottle of formula,

We snuggled.
We stopped during the feeding to talk, and jabber, and coo, and smile at one another.
He tried to grab my face.
I cleaned his crusty eyes and put lotion on his cheeks.
I kissed his forehead.
I smelled him and I breathed him in.
I was able to love him better, I was able to bond with him better.

And I cried happy tears.

It was the first feeding where he wasn’t crying and unsatisfied.
It was the first feeding where he looked at me with love instead of worry and tears.
It was relaxing.
It was loving.
My heart screamed with pure happiness.

So no.
No, I did not feed my baby “liquid gold” for long.
I’m not going to tell about all the reasons why, and all the struggles.

Because this is my motherhood.

I switched to formula.
And I cried happy tears.

I switched to formula, and I took my motherhood back.
I made it my own.
My own unique path.

So friend,
Make motherhood choices that are best for you and your babies...your kids.
Own your version of motherhood.
Own what’s right in your heart.
Own what fills you with peace.

Rather than asking the internet, or your friends.
Look up, and ask Him.
He knows your heart.
He knows your child.
He’s got the answers. .

Then own your motherhood.

Motherboard Birth

Motherboard Birth

CERVICAL EXAMS

The cervix is the “neck” of the womb between your vagina and uterus/baby.
During pregnancy it is firm, thick, and closed tight. During late pregnancy and during birth it softens, thins, and opens.

Your provider can use their fingers to feel your cervix to gain information. Cervical exams (aka vaginal exams) won't predict the future but they can let you know what your body has done so far. This information can be helpful if you need to make a decision.

As with any decision, it is your body and you have a say in what happens. You can ask for a cervical exam if you feel like that information would be helpful to you and you can also decline a cervical exam if you do not want it done. Talk with your provider to decide when an exam may be medically necessary or just preferred.
