Nutrients to Boost Immune Function

The COVID-19 Pandemic has taught us how important it is to maintain excellent immunity in our bodies. In a previous blog, I stressed the importance of maintaining healthy nutrition, adequate exercise and good sleep habits. These are basics in maintaining a healthy immune system.

I would now like to give you some suggestions for nutrients and supplements that can also enhance immunity.

· Vitamin D – In a large 2019 study vitamin D administration was found to decrease the number and severity of upper respiratory illnesses. It also enhances the effect of other antiviral medicines. Recommended doses range from 2000-5000iu per day.

· Zinc – This element is frequently found in immune boosting over the counter lozenges. Zinc deficiency is more commonly found in patients with pneumonia, and zinc administration decreases the duration of the common cold. The recommended dose of zinc is 20-40mg per day.

· Vitamin C – This vitamin is a very potent anti-oxidant and immune booster. It has been shown to decrease the duration of the common cold. Recommended doses are between 1000-2000 mg per day.

In my next blog I will continue with immune enhancing supplements. You can find additional information on our website at www.Hormonewellness.net

If you wish to learn more or begin your individualized immune boosting regimen, consider calling our office for an immune boosting consultation.

Maintaining a Healthy Lifestyle During COVID-19 Isolation

"We are all under much stress during these days of social isolation while we await the decline of the Corona Virus Pandemic. It is important both physically and emotionally to maintain normal schedules for our body and brains. Don’t interpret social distancing and staying home from work as a vacation. It is important to follow normal routines. Be extra careful to eat, exercise and sleep well. Protein intake is especially important in maintaining good health. Most people need about 1 gram of protein per Kg of body weight daily (roughly 60-100 g per day). It is important to only consume low glycemic index carbohydrates. These carbohydrates minimally raise blood sugar and insulin levels. Continue to exercise 180 minutes per week (50% aerobic and 50% resistance). Continue with normal sleep hours. Sleep patters help to maintain cortisol levels and improve brain health. Try to get 7-9 hours of sleep per night. Sticking to these simple recommendations will allow us to maintain good health during this challenging time and upon our return to our normal lifestyles. In my next blog, I will focus on immune-boosting supplements." Dr. Peters

🌿What is a Prebiotic?

"Prebiotics are basically food for probiotics. Probiotics are bacteria that help to digest food. These good bacterias require a food source like any other cell. Prebiotics provide the nutrition source for them. Prebiotics are not living cells, but are complex carbohydrates (or several sugar molecules linked together). They are actually fiber molecules. When prebiotics arrive in the gut, they are fermented by the probiotics which allows them to be used as a nutrition source. Inulin is a commercially available prebiotic. Foods that serve as prebiotics include onions, artichokes, and slightly green bananas." - Dr. Peters

🌿"Everyone has a unique set of bacteria in their gut that collectively is called the “microbiome”. The microbiome is responsible for proper digestion and nutrient absorption. If the microbiome becomes unbalanced, Leaky Gut Syndrome can develop resulting in digestion problems, diarrhea, constipation, increased gas formation and inflammation. Probiotics help to restore good bacteria in the gut to maintain healthy bacterial balance. Fortunately, there are a large number of commercially available probiotics available to assist with microbiome balance. Foods rich in probiotics are sourdough bread, Kimchi, pickles, kefir, yogurt, miso, sauerkraut and kombucha." - Dr. Peters

Join David Peters and Tyler Kreger as we spread hope around the world!

My Son, David Peters, and his roommate, Tyler Kreger, are taking action by uniting with 16,500 student volunteers to raise funds and awareness in the fight against childhood cancer.

Since 1977, THON has raised over $168 million for Four Diamonds at Penn State Children's Hospital. Throughout our partnership, we have ensured that over 4,000 families have not seen a single medical bill. In addition, the local research that is being done is making a global impact so that one day, we will find a cure.

Each February, THON's yearlong efforts and support for the families culminate in a 46-hour, no-sitting, no-sleeping dance marathon. By supporting THON, you will be joining a community committed to conquering childhood cancer.

"The Gut (otherwise known as the digestive tract) is one of the most important organ systems in the body. If gut function is abnormal, the entire body’s wellness is in jeopardy. Those who have poor gut health, risk increased inflammation throughout their bodies, weight gain, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and mood disorders. Simple improvements can include low inflammation, gluten free diets, not adding sugars to food or drinks, eating healthy amounts for fruits and vegetables and taking a good probiotic regimen." - Dr. Peters

Pitfalls of Testosterone Replacement:

"Men, are you being properly monitored if you are taking testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)? Talk to your doctor about safe monitoring of TRT. TRT can cause in increase prostate growth. Annual prostate specific antigen (PSA) testing should be done. Difficulties urinating dictate an evaluation by a urologist. Testosterone can also increase the number of red blood cells resulting in blood clotting. Testosterone can also increase the level of the female hormone, estradiol. Too much estradiol in men can lead to fatigue, breast development, sexual dysfunction and weight gain. An ultrasensitive estradiol level should be done every 6-12 months while on TRT. Excess testosterone can also lead to scalp hair loss and personality changes. Regular testosterone monitoring is an important part of safe TRT." - Dr. Peters
