Luft family’s Christmas wish: A recovery for Jennifer | News, Sports, Jobs - Leader Herald

The Leader Herald wrote an article about Jen and the current campaign to provide her an RV. Mountain Valley Hospice is graciously working with Jen's family to provide her with an RV equipped to handle moving Jen long distances. They also donated concert tickets and back stage passes to see and meet Sawyer Fredericks, who her mom said was incredibly kind and generous. Thank you to all of the wonderful people who continue to support Jen and get her story out there!

March is National Brain Injury Awareness Month. While Jen's injury was not sustained as a result of a traumatic incident, we hope to prevent anyone from unnecessarily having to undergo the struggles that she now faces. TBI's can be preventable! Another incredible update on Jen's progress in PT, she is peddling a bike with and without assistance from her therapists! Jen is really doing an amazing job, and is continuing to get stronger every day. We are all so proud of her, and love seeing how far she has come since sustaining her injury. Another update on Jen's progress: Jen has been hard at work building up strength in both her body and her ability to communicate. Jen has been walking with the aid of a harness at physical therapy for a few months now. This has helped her build up her leg strength immensely. Her therapists are hoping that she will be able to start walking without the strap soon!
Additionally, since she sustained her injury, It has been extremely difficult for Jen to communicate with family, friends, and doctors. Recently, Jen has started learning how to communicate through a computer! This is a huge step in making life a little easier for Jen.
She is going to therapy very frequently and is pushing hard every day to get better. She is not giving up and is such a fighter! We are extremely proud of her and know that Jen is living proof that miracles really do happen. Please continue to pray for Jen!

As you all know, Jen has been hard at work trying to regain her ability to communicate with her friends, family, and doctors. Over the past few weeks, her therapists have been working with her to associate the words 'yes' and 'no' with arm movements. This week, Jen was able to respond with a firm 'no' when asked a question! She has been showing a strong desire to respond to the people who talk to her by making noises and moving her body. She has been trying incredibly hard to communicate and she is improving week to week. She has also been able to move her legs on command and is working to lift herself up in bed by herself.

We are so proud of her progress, and we continue to cheer her on as she recovers

Jen has been hard at work in therapy the last few months! This past week she worked on moving her arms some more. They are hoping eventually these arm signals, one for yes, two for no, will be able to help her parents, friends, and therapists communicate with her better and to help make her more comfortable. She has been working on swallowing with a therapist which allows for her to enjoy some food as well as start working on her speech! For now, we have to interpret what the noises she makes mean to her, but we hope that eventually Jen will be able to talk to us with full words and sentences.
She has been working incredibly hard the past 15 months, and she has a long road ahead of her. Hopefully with the continuation of this therapy, she will continue to make great strides and improvements. We encourage you to leave Jen some positive messages on this page so that we can read them to her and let her know that she has so many people who are rooting for her recovery!

A few updates for you on Jen's progress! Jen has been working at physical therapy to walk within a harness and to strengthen her legs. She has been working incredibly hard to regain the ability to control her body, and this is a huge step in the right direction for her. In addition to this, Jen has been working to lift her arms up together as well as one at a time! Jen has been making some really great progress and is working so hard to recover. We are so proud of her and are so glad to see how far she has come and continues to go!

Jen has been improving little by little each day! She has OT/PT once a week and last time she was put in the standing gate, she started to walk instantly. Each day we have been continuing to see more progress! Jen is fighting and getting stronger every day! Keep praying for her, we know you can do it Jen!

Jen Luft, 23, was a "normal, healthy child" up until this past Christmas, her dad Rodney Luft said. The Amsterdam resident graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in psychology and she was very involved with the school's marching band.

We are really excited to announce that the wonderful organization NiceShirt.org has selected us as their next campaign! What they do is design a shirt for a cause, in this case for Jen, and a good portion of the t-shirt sales go to that cause! They run a campaign for two weeks on their website and we will run our own social media efforts to sell the shirts. It is really exciting and we will have more information to come! Please feel free to like their page, they are an incredible organization and we are so thankful that they are going to help us!

Thank you to those who were able to join us at yesterdays event, those who made donations, and those who donated baskets for the silent auction! This event went above and beyond our expectations and it was a rousing success. Nicole did an absolutely fabulous job with this event and Jen's other friends and family cannot thank her enough! Additionally, we would like to thank Sport Island Pub and Restaurant for supplying the food at the event, it was absolutely spectacular and the dinner was delicious. To the volunteers who donated their time to help set up, break down, and everything in between, we were so grateful to have had your help. We are so glad that Jen's community came together to support her and her family in their time of need, it was a very touching sight to see how many people came out to the benefit. Thank you everyone, without all of you, this event would not have been possible.
