🐢🥚 DID YOU KNOW… ONE MAMA SEA TURTLE CAN HUNDREDS OF EGGS IN A SINGLE NESTING SEASON?! 😲🌊 Talk about one BUSY mama! 💗🐢 When a female Loggerhead sea turtle comes ashore to nest on Anna Maria Island, she's not just dropping off a few eggs and calling it a day!

🥚 100–120 EGGS PER NEST! That's right! One mama can lay over 100 tiny, ping-pong-ball-sized eggs in a single nest!

🐢 5–7 NESTS PER SEASON! During a nesting season, she may return to the beach approximately every TWO WEEKS to lay another clutch of eggs!

🧮 LET'S DO SOME TURTLE MATH!

That's potentially 500–840 EGGS from just ONE mama turtle in a single nesting season! 🤯🥚

And here's something even more amazing…

After carefully digging her nest, laying her eggs, and covering them with sand, mama turtle heads back to the Gulf. 🌊 She won't be there when her babies hatch!

Those tiny hatchlings will have to dig their way out of the sand and make their incredible journey to the water all on their own. 🐢💕

Unfortunately, only a small percentage of sea turtle hatchlings survive to adulthood, which makes EVERY protected nest so important!

That's why we're so thankful for the dedicated volunteers and staff at Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch & Shorebird Monitoring, who work tirelessly to protect these precious nests and give the next generation of sea turtles the best possible start! 💚

🐢🌊 DID YOU KNOW… SEA TURTLES CAN HOLD THEIR BREATH FOR HOURS?! How long can you hold your breath? 30 seconds? A minute? Maybe a little longer? Well, sea turtles would definitely win that contest! 😂🐢 Sea turtles cannot breathe underwater, but they are incredible breath-holders. Depending on what they’re doing, they can stay underwater for hours!

🤿 When they’re active and looking for food: they typically surface every few minutes for a quick breath.

😴 When they’re resting or sleeping: they can stay underwater for 4–7 hours!

❄️ And in cold water, some sea turtles can remain submerged for even longer. The longest recorded submersion of a wild sea turtle was about 7 hours, when a Loggerhead was overwintering in Greece. 🐢⏰

So how do they do it?

Sea turtles have some pretty amazing adaptations. When they dive and need to conserve oxygen, their heart rate slows way down. Incredibly, there can be up to nine minutes between heartbeats! ❤️🐢

But here's an important reminder: a healthy, relaxed turtle can stay underwater for hours, but a stressed or trapped turtle can run out of oxygen much faster. This is one reason keeping our oceans and waterways free of fishing line, nets and other debris is so important. 🌊💙

So the next time you see a turtle pop its head above the water for a quick breath, remember…

That little guy may have been underwater for quite a while! 😮🐢
