"We did it differently when you were a baby."
Grandparents and experienced caregivers may remember different advice—and that's understandable. Safe sleep recommendations have changed as researchers have learned more about SIDS and sleep-related infant deaths.
Today, the recommendation is clear: every person who cares for baby should place baby on their back for every sleep—including naps.
Before leaving your baby with someone else, take a minute to talk about your safe sleep routine:
Back to sleep. Firm, flat surface. Empty crib. Separate sleep space. Every time.

👶 Close by doesn't have to mean in the same bed.
Safe to Sleep® recommends room sharing for at least baby's first 6 months, with baby sleeping in their own crib, bassinet or portable play yard near the adult bed.
Room sharing makes it easier to feed, comfort and check on baby while maintaining a separate, safer sleep space. Bed sharing is not recommended because it increases the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths.

Same room. Separate sleep space.

Today, October 15, we recognize Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day.

At The Baby Place, we remember the precious babies whose lives, no matter how brief, have left a lasting imprint on the hearts of their families.

To every parent and family who has experienced the loss of a baby through miscarriage, stillbirth, ectopic pregnancy, SIDS, or infant loss, we see you, we remember with you, and we honor the love that will always remain.

Some lives are brief, but the love lasts forever. 🩷🩵

It may look a little bare—but that's exactly how baby's sleep space should look.
Use a firm, flat and level sleep surface covered only with a fitted sheet. Keep pillows, loose blankets, stuffed animals, crib bumpers and other objects out of baby's sleep area.
Need to keep baby warm? Consider a wearable blanket rather than adding loose blankets to the crib.
Simple is safer when it comes to baby's sleep space.

We’re proud to have Patty, RN, from The Baby Place join Healthy Conversations to answer common safe sleep questions every parent, grandparent and caregiver should know.

Take a few minutes to watch or listen — and please share with someone who cares for a baby. 💚

“We did it that way when you were a baby, and you turned out just fine.”

Parents hear it all the time. But safe sleep recommendations have changed as we’ve learned more about reducing the risk of sleep-related infant deaths.

In this episode of Healthy Conversations, Patty Robertson, RN, with The Baby Place at Athens-Limestone Hospital, answers some of the questions parents — and grandparents — ask most:

💤 Back or belly for sleep?
🛏️ What should actually be in the crib?
🧸 Are blankets, stuffed animals or bumpers safe?
🚗 What if baby falls asleep in the car seat?
👶 What should you do once baby starts rolling over?
🏠 Room-sharing or bed-sharing?

Whether you’re a new parent, grandparent, babysitter or anyone who cares for a baby, this is an important conversation to watch — and share.

💤 Every sleep starts on the back.
One of the most important steps parents and caregivers can take to reduce the risk of SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths is to place babies on their backs for every sleep—at night and for naps.
That recommendation applies to all babies, including babies with reflux, unless your baby's healthcare provider has given you different medical instructions.
And remember: everyone who cares for your baby should follow the same safe sleep routine.
