One month into the school year, we're already seeing how quickly things can change.

Caseloads shift.
Schedules evolve.
New needs appear.

September is a good reminder that school-based allied healthcare is never completely static.

When we're working with students, it's tempting to help immediately when we see them struggling.

But sometimes we pause.

We give them a moment.

We let them try.

We provide just enough support to help them succeed.

Then we gradually step back.

Because our goal isn't for the student to always need us.

Our goal is to help them become more independent.

Therapy doesn't always look like sitting quietly at a table answering questions.

Depending on the student's goals, our sessions can involve:

Movement.

Games.

Hands-on activities.

Communication practice.

Fine-motor activities.

Functional tasks.

Balance and mobility work.

Visual supports.

And plenty of opportunities to practice skills in meaningful ways.

We want students to understand:

“I CAN DO THIS.”

A busy classroom can be a lot for some students. Sounds, movement, bright lights, crowded spaces, textures, and constant activity can make it harder for a student to focus, participate, and feel regulated.

You may notice signs such as covering their ears, avoiding certain activities, difficulty staying focused, becoming overwhelmed in busy spaces, needing frequent breaks, or stimming. These behaviors may be a sign that a student is experiencing sensory overload.

Speech, Occupational, and Physical Therapy can help students with sensory challenges by supporting communication, regulation, movement, coordination, focus, and participation.

Simple classroom strategies can also make a meaningful difference. Consider adding sensory toys or tools to the room, providing fidget items to help busy hands stay engaged while supporting focus, or using a body ball to provide appropriate opportunities for movement. Creating a quiet space, offering movement breaks, and using visual routines can also help students feel more comfortable and ready to learn.

Understanding sensory needs can help teachers and families recognize what a student may be communicating through their behavior and identify strategies that support success.

“Follow the directions.”
“Get started.”

These instructions may seem simple, but for some students, they can be surprisingly difficult to process.

A student may understand each individual step but struggle when several directions are given at once.

Breaking instructions into smaller steps, using visual cues, and giving students enough processing time can make classroom expectations easier to understand.

The goal isn't simply to get students to follow directions — it's to help them develop the skills they need to participate more independently.
