"I was diagnosed with PCOS in my 30s. It has been a rollercoaster of up and down battles, dealing with negative comments from people who don't understand, doctors who don't want to research, loved ones who can't relate, and my own mind filled with anxious thoughts and depression.

"PCOS is a condition that wreaks havoc on the body, causing it to spiral out of control. Excessive hair growth, constant weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, anxiety, and depression are just a few symptoms that I have had to fight since age 15. In 2019, I had a hemorrhagic stroke. I nearly lost my life because I gave up fighting. I vowed to never come that close to death again. I am not perfect and I still have my struggles. However, as hard as it may be, I am determined to control my PCOS. PCOS will not control me."

"My PCOS journey started back in junior high school. I always knew there was something wrong but I didn't get a diagnosis until after high school. When I got diagnosed, I was scared and had little support, so I decided to reach out to others with PCOS for support. I quickly realized how much PCOS needed awareness; I made a post on social media about PCOS and got so many responses. I live in a small town and want to spread awareness.

"So many people with PCOS are confused or not taken seriously. Knowing PCOS is so common makes me feel less alone. Thank you PCOS Challenge!"

"I'm 46 years old and suffering from PCOS. I was diagnosed in my early 20s and nothing about PCOS has changed—no cure and no positive help. I was fortunate enough to have children and no complications, but I suffer in so many other ways. From extreme and easy weight gain, facial hair, depression, and anxiety to sleepless nights, and no energy whatsoever. I am now battling hair loss to the point where it was once vibrant and thick to very thin that you can see my scalp.

"It’s hard to be positive about self-image when you can't look in the mirror and say, 'I look good.' From shaving your face daily to not eating just so you hope to lose a few pounds, always wondering if your spouse is still in love with you because you've gained weight and losing hair. I also have diabetes and it's not fun at all. It only adds to the disgrace of this syndrome. Women need more resources and treatment plans. We lose so much from this syndrome yet gain it all plus some in pounds."

Massachusetts Legislature PCOS Briefing

Rep. Nika Elugardo of the 15th Suffolk District and 10 others in the House introduced Bill H. 3735, an act petitioning the annual issuance of a proclamation by the Governor setting apart the month of September as polycystic o***y syndrome awareness month.

This briefing is to give an overview of the bill and to learn from Massachusetts citizens about the impact that PCOS has on them as people with lived experience and members of the medical and allied health communities that care for PCOS patients.

09/13/2021

"Like most PCOS stories, mine began with having to fight for a diagnosis. I was gaining weight rapidly, my hair was thinning, and I was experiencing heavy, irregular, and painful menstrual cycles. I knew something was off but was told time and time again by the GP that these were normal symptoms of puberty. Thankfully, my mother had the presence of mind to take me to an amazing OBGYN and I was diagnosed with PCOS at the age of 14 (I know, I was lucky).

"But then another set of issues arose, which left me feeling hopeless and broken. Yes, I finally had a diagnosis and was in a sense validated that it wasn’t all in my head, but I couldn’t handle what it meant to have PCOS. After being told to control my carbohydrate and calorie intake, I started a vicious cycle of starving, bingeing, purging, and exercise bulimia. Instead of seeing food as this amazing thing that nourishes our bodies, I saw food as the enemy. Instead of seeing exercise as a privilege, I saw it as a punishment. After so many years, I have now accepted my PCOS and have been able to manage it without any destructive behavior.

"Always remember that healing is a process. It’s definitely not linear. Every day is a struggle, but I’m doing the work and it’s worth it."

"PCOS is experienced differently from one woman to the next. For far too long, the scientific community has created a void in studying the lives of Black women within their own essence. When it comes to PCOS, symptom management is critical to improving health-related quality of life. Our research is focused on understanding the symptoms and lived experiences of Black women with PCOS. We focus on depression, anxiety, fatigue, body image, race-related stress, and social support among other factors. We explore the metabolome and microbiome to understand what physiological pathways are related to these factors in Black women with PCOS. Additionally, we explore how these symptoms and pathways might differ among women with PCOS who also have high blood pressure.

"This work will create a more contextualized understanding of the symptom experience of Black women with PCOS. Understanding the pathways associated with symptoms will also inform more personalized health strategies and interventions. Our goal is for all women with PCOS to be seen, to be heard, and to help optimize ways for them to manage their symptoms."
